Las Vegas’s iconic Sphere venue is breathing new life into the beloved classic “The Wizard of Oz,” utilizing advanced AI technology and its unparalleled LED dome screen to offer audiences an unprecedented cinematic journey. The revamped experience, launching August 28, promises to transport viewers directly into the magical world of Oz.

A World of Wonders Unfolds

The sheer scale of the Sphere’s screen, spanning over 160,000 square feet (approximately 14,800 square meters), dwarfs conventional cinema displays. Instead of traditional projection, the venue employs a fully enveloping LED surface that redefines the very act of watching a film. This massive “ball curtain” is set to make familiar sights, like the Yellow Brick Road, feel astonishingly real.

AI Enhances Visuals for Deeper Immersion

According to James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, the new “Wizard of Oz” is more than a simple rerun. A dedicated team of 2,000 professionals leveraged AI, particularly an “Outpainting” algorithm, to meticulously recreate and expand the film’s original imagery. This technological artistry fills in areas beyond the initial frame, making previously blurred close-ups of characters like Dorothy incredibly detailed. Audiences will experience new vistas, including extended views of Scarecrow, the vibrant Yellow Brick Road, and even the distant Oz Mountains, presented with clarity previously unseen.

Turner Classic Movie Channel host Ben Mankiewicz lauded the transformation, describing the updated visuals as a “magical reappearance.”

Dolan stressed that the core narrative and performances of “The Wizard of Oz” remain unaltered. The focus is entirely on elevating the viewing method into an immersive voyage.
