The season finale of Hulu’s “Tell Me Lies” concluded the series with a cascade of betrayals, revelations, and a final, ambiguous parting between Lucy Albright (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (Jackson White). Creator Meaghan Oppenheimer confirmed on Instagram that the episode, released Wednesday, was “always the ending” she and her writing team envisioned.
The episode’s central drama unfolded at the wedding of Bree Walker (Cat Missal) and Evan Fields (Branden Cook). Prior to the ceremony, Bree discovered evidence of an affair between Evan and Lucy, a secret Evan had kept hidden for years. Meanwhile, Wrigley (Spencer House) confessed to Bree that he had been involved with her throughout her engagement, a storyline House said he was “thankful” the show had a third season to explore, according to USA Today.
Adding to the turmoil, Pippa (Sonia Mena) revealed to Wrigley that she is gay and had been cheating on him, also disclosing that Stephen had sent compromising nude photos of Diana (Alicia Crowder) to her father. Pippa challenged Wrigley and the group’s consistent failure to hold Stephen accountable for his actions.
The fallout from Lucy’s past resurfaced when a video of her confession – in which she initially lied about being sexually assaulted – was released publicly. The episode initially led viewers to suspect Bree of releasing the tape, but the truth proved more complex. Bree ultimately confessed to Lucy that she was responsible, a decision prompted by learning Lucy had lied to protect Pippa.
Stephen, whose admission to Yale Law School had been jeopardized by his behavior, attempted to sabotage the wedding by revealing Lucy and Evan’s past encounter. But, Bree had already learned of the affair and confronted Evan, leading to a reconciliation. Yale ultimately rescinded Stephen’s admission due to information regarding his “behavior” and “online harassment,” with a strong implication that Wrigley was the source of the information, according to reports.
In a final, unsettling scene, Lucy agreed to exit with Stephen, despite Bree’s pleas not to trust him. Stephen abandoned Lucy at a remote gas station, leaving her stranded and alone. The episode concluded with Lucy laughing, seemingly at the culmination of her destructive choices. Van Patten described the ending as “the perfect ending” in an interview with USA Today.
The finale also saw Diana and Pippa finding happiness together, choosing to attend Yale together after Stephen’s rejection. Stephen’s engagement to Lucy’s childhood friend, Lydia, ended when he revealed his continued feelings for Lucy.
Bree and Wrigley shared a final gaze across the room, hinting at a potential future relationship despite the chaos of the wedding day.
