Team World Defeats Team Europe to Claim 2025 Laver Cup Title
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Team World secured a decisive 15-9 victory over Team Europe at the 2025 Laver Cup, concluding play at the Chase Center in San francisco, California, on September 22nd. Despite a late surge led by Carlos Alcaraz, Team World proved too strong, claiming the championship in the sixth edition of the prestigious men’s tennis competition.
the Laver Cup, founded in 2017 and named in honor of Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, pits a team representing the rest of the world against a team comprised of the top European players. This year’s result marks a meaningful win for Team World, demonstrating the growing strength of talent outside of Europe’s traditional dominance in the sport. The tournament offers a unique team dynamic, fostering camaraderie and competitive spirit amongst players typically facing off as rivals.
Team World’s roster included Taylor fritz (5th, USA), Alex de Minaur (8th, Australia), Francis Cerúndolo (21st, Argentina), Alix Michelsen (32nd, USA), Juan Fonseca (42nd, Brazil), and Riley Opelka (62nd, USA). Team Europe featured Carlos Alcaraz (1st, Spain), Alexander Zverev (3rd, Germany), Holger Rune (11th, Denmark), Casper Ruud (12th, Norway), Jakub Mensik (17th), Tomás macháč (22nd, Czech Republic), and Flavio Cobolli (25th, Italy).
Team World held a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the final day of competition. Alcaraz briefly ignited a comeback for Team Europe,securing wins in both singles and doubles to narrow the gap to 9-12. however,the momentum ultimately stalled.
The decisive moment came in the final singles match, where Alexander Zverev needed a victory over Taylor Fritz to tie the score at 12-12. Fritz prevailed, winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), sealing the championship for Team World. While Alcaraz contributed two wins to the European effort, it wasn’t enough to overcome the overall strength and consistency of Team World.
