Taylor Swift is bringing the launch of her new album, “Showgirl,” directly to movie theaters wiht “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl.” The program will be shown in over a hundred countries internationally, beginning with a concurrent release alongside the U.S. on October 3-5.
Initial territories joining the U.S. for the premiere include Canada, Mexico, the U.K., France, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Tickets for thes countries go on sale this Tuesday. Additional countries will follow on a later weekend in October, with dates to be announced around October 3.
Swift announced the event on social media, stating the program will feature ”cut by cut explanations of what inspired this music.” She also encouraged attendees to dance, noting, “Dancing is optional but very much encouraged.” The album reunites Swift with producers Max Martin and Shellback, after a period of working separately.
Rumors of a theatrical project from Swift had circulated in recent weeks, with many initially speculating it would be a documentary of her “Eras Tour.” However, fans recognized the unlikelihood of a retrospective film coinciding with a new album release.
The proclamation follows the unprecedented success of Swift’s previous film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which remains the highest-grossing concert film in history. It earned $181 million domestically and $262 million worldwide, with a $92.8 million opening weekend – the second-best October opening of all time. That film was distributed by AMC Theatres Distribution, extending availability to other chains and independent theaters, and later streamed on Disney+.
While “The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” will have a limited theatrical run compared to “The Eras Tour,” it is expected to provide a significant boost to theater operators during the fall season. The film will compete with the opening of Dwayne Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine” and a re-release of “Avatar: The Way of Water” that same weekend.
