Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran to Step Down in 2027
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran announced he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, according to reporting by Rediff.com.
The Boardroom Impasse Behind the Departure
According to statements cited by Rediff.com, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust—which hold majority stakes in the holding company—unanimously recommended extending Chandrasekaran’s tenure by an additional five years. The Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee subsequently endorsed the proposal.
However, the motion failed to achieve unanimous backing after a single board member withheld support. In the six months following the vote, no compromise materialized. Chandrasekaran stated that he chose to defer the decision in the absence of total alignment, eventually communicating his withdrawal to the board to preserve strategic momentum.
Strategic Implications for Group Subsidiaries
Tata Sons oversees more than 30 enterprise companies, including major public entities like Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, and national carrier Air India. Having spent 40 years within the broader Tata Group, he has led the holding company since 2017 following his tenure as chief executive officer of Tata Consultancy Services.

Corporate Governance and Succession Planning Pressures
Chandrasekaran has urged the Tata Sons board to determine his successor expeditiously to safeguard operational continuity.
