Stampede at Indian Actor-politician Vijay‘s rally Leaves Dozens dead
Karur, Tamil Nadu, India – A stampede at a political rally held by Indian actor and politician Vijay in Karur, tamil Nadu, has resulted in at least 36 deaths and more than 50 injuries, officials confirmed Wednesday. The incident underscores growing concerns about crowd control and safety at large political gatherings in India.
The tragedy occurred as a massive influx of supporters overwhelmed local infrastructure despite restrictions imposed by police, including limits on caravan size and venue changes. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced a commission has been created to investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and pledged 1 million Indian rupees (approximately US $11,280) to the families of those killed. Forty-four doctors from the nearby districts of Touchirappalli and Salem have been dispatched to Karur to assist with the injured.
This is not the first time a rally organized by Vijay’s political party has faced security challenges. At least six deaths where reported following a similar event in October of last year. The sheer number of attendees repeatedly surpasses the capacity of local resources, even with preventative measures in place.
Indian Prime Minister narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply unfortunate.”
Authorities continue to assess the situation and provide support to those affected. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
