liverpool’s newest signing, Hugo Ekitike, is facing scrutiny after a video surfaced appearing to show him filming himself driving a £200,000 Mercedes. The footage, reportedly posted on Snapchat, has sparked concerns about road safety and potential legal repercussions.
The incident occurred shortly after Ekitike completed his move to Anfield, and the video’s circulation raises questions about the player’s judgment and adherence to responsible driving practices. Using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle is illegal in the United Kingdom, carrying a potential fine of £200 and six penalty points on a driving license.
Ekitike, 21, joined Liverpool on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain on August 29, 2023, with an option to buy.The forward has been touted as a promising addition to the Reds’ attacking lineup, but this incident casts a shadow over his arrival.
The video shows Ekitike operating the vehicle while simultaneously recording with his mobile phone. Authorities have not yet confirmed weather an inquiry has been launched, but the footage has drawn criticism from road safety advocates. A spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (rospa) stated that any distraction while driving considerably increases the risk of an accident.
Liverpool Football Club has not yet commented on the matter. It remains to be seen whether Ekitike will face any disciplinary action from the club or legal consequences from authorities.
