Resident of Scheidingsweg Injured in Home Assault – Police Investigating

A resident of Scheidingsweg in New Amsterdam was injured last night after an argument in his home.

Initially, the police suspected that it was a home invasion. But on closer inspection, that does not seem to be the case, says a police spokesperson. “The victim let two people in earlier in the evening. One of them was an acquaintance of his. A conflict arose in the house. The incident looks more like an assault.”

That happened around ten o’clock in the evening. The victim suffered injuries during the assault. He was taken to hospital for this. The perpetrators ran away. The police are investigating the case and are checking, among other things, whether the perpetrators also took items from the house.

Emmen Municipality Recognizes Former Firefighter’s PTSD as Occupational Disease – Compensation Pending

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

After 23 years, the municipality of Emmen now recognizes the PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) of former firefighter Ruud Lohuis (63) as an occupational disease. This opens the way for compensation for all the damage he has suffered as a result of his illness. The Emmen resident reacts with relief. “23 years of fighting pays off. Yes man, this makes me so happy. This is what I have always waited for.”

Lohuis receives the redeeming news in his camper in Portugal, where he is ‘hibernating’. The decision of the municipality of Emmen feels ‘like a liberation’ to him. “The fight is finally over. They now have to bare their butts,” he says, referring to the negotiations about compensation that are yet to come.

“But I achieved everything I wanted, and to be honest, I didn’t expect this anymore,” says Lohuis, “but I certainly hoped for it.” That hope will especially grow if he achieves success this summer in proceedings before the highest court for civil servants, the Central Appeals Tribunal. He rules that Emmen is indeed liable for Lohuis’s psychological complaints. Because there was no aftercare, this court also concludes. “Finally the truth is coming to light,” Lohuis said hopefully at the time, after more than twenty years of struggle.

The Emmenaar was a fire guard and diver for the fire brigade in Emmen between 1982 and 1993. During that period he had to deal with about 25 serious incidents and this was not without consequences. Lohuis suffers from serious sleeping problems, has outbursts of anger and experiences relives and fears. He tries to get attention from his managers for his problems, but finds no response. “I shouldn’t complain and just get to work. Because it was part of our job.”

Due to his ‘unruly behavior’, Lohuis loses his job, his family and most of his circle of friends. In 2014, a psychiatrist from GGZ Emmen finally made a clear diagnosis: the man suffered from delayed PTSD, as a result of his traumatic experiences during his work in the fire brigade. The Emmen resident is entering a treatment process. He also holds the municipality liable for all material and immaterial damage he has suffered as a result of his illness. But Emmen does not want to know of any liability. Lohuis disputes this and remains combative despite several rejections.

This summer, the former firefighter will have the Central Appeals Council on his side. He believes that as a firefighter Lohuis had to deal with ‘excessive working conditions’ and that it is completely logical that this did not affect him. Emmen also failed in the aftercare process. That was a big slap on the wrist for the municipality.

Emmen could have appealed against the decision of the civil servants court, but ultimately did not do so. The mayor and the municipal secretary report in a letter to Lohuis’ counsel Ferre van de Nadort ‘that they now acknowledge liability due to Lohuis’ occupational disease’, and ‘that the request for compensation will be discussed further’. The letter is on behalf of the mayor and aldermen.

It also states that the municipality of Emmen has no burden of proof for ‘adequate aftercare’ to Lohuis, which it has claimed so far in the procedures. The Central Appeals Tribunal wants to see proof of this. But according to Emmen, that is not possible. “It concerns a situation that was so long ago that little or no relevant information can be found anymore. This means that we no longer have the opportunity to substantiate that the duty of care was fulfilled at the time.” Partly for this reason, Emmen has decided to acknowledge liability.

Opposite RTV Drenthe Emmen refuses further substantive comment on the case of the former firefighter. “We do not make any statements about personnel matters, not even if it concerns a former employee,” spokesperson Martin de Bruin said on behalf of the mayor.

Lawyer Van de Nadort will now continue with Emmen in the battle about compensation. The lawyer cannot and will not say anything about the possible amount of the damages. He does hope to be able to reach an agreement with the municipality ‘quickly and effectively’. “We want compensation for everything that happened to Ruud, hopefully everything can now be done more expeditiously,” says Van de Nadort.

Whether the parties will actually reach an agreement quickly remains to be seen. In 1995, agreements were made regarding the dismissal of Ruud Lohuis as a municipal official, but according to the former firefighter, these were ‘never fully fulfilled’. He will also no longer have access to the municipal system for his pay slips. That turns out to be a handicap.

“We still have to fully list the financial damage. To do this, Ruud’s financial administration must be complete, including his previous pay slips. So first we need to have all the information in order to then arrive at a well-substantiated damage amount.” , concludes Van de Nadort.

‘Bus hangers’ hitch a ride on the Emmen-Ter Apel shuttle line: ‘Look like Indian scenes’

‘Bus hangers’ hitch a ride on the Emmen-Ter Apel shuttle line: ‘Look like Indian scenes’

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 16, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Two men recently climbed onto the back of a Drenthe Tours bus. Images show two unknown men wearing camouflage jackets hanging at the back of the shuttle line for migrants between Emmen and Ter Apel. One of the two men quickly takes the lead and lets go of the bus, while another holds out longer. The incident happened on Boslaan in Emmen, near the main station.

Drenthe Tours is not the client of the shuttle bus line. Transport is via Munckhof transport company. Bas de Smit, spokesperson for that carrier, states that the images are six weeks old. “In the video footage we see someone hanging from a Scandinavian bicycle rack on the back of the bus,” he says.

De Smit confirms that the incident on the video images corresponds to the incident on the photo that RTV Drenthe has in its possession. “They are different images, but it is of the same behavior. It is the same vehicle. What drives such a person? A one-way ticket on this bus costs 5 euros. You can buy the ticket at the security of the asylum center or with your debit card on the bus. “

According to De Smit, Drenthe Tours has decided to take measures in response to these ‘bus hangers’. “The situation is of course very dangerous, the bus drives to Ter Apel without any stops. It looks like Indian scenes of people climbing onto a train. The driver will not notice if you fall off the bus. That is why the bicycle rack is closed immediately after the behavior. deleted.”

Nothing is known about the identity of the bus hangers, but De Smit strongly believes that they are migrants. “The situation there is already very tense and something often happens. The assumption is that they were migrants, but we don’t know that for sure. The most important thing is that it ended well,” he concludes.

You can see more of the bus hangers in the video below, which was filmed from a screen on October 28.

Car Fire on A37 Near New Amsterdam Causes Panic and Traffic Jam

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 5, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Two occupants of a car on the A37 near New Amsterdam had the fright of their lives this morning.

While the pair were driving on the highway, a fire broke out in the car. The driver managed to stop the car on the hard shoulder of an exit, after which the duo were able to leave the car unharmed. Firefighters from Emmen extinguished the fire. The fire closed an exit for some time, causing a traffic jam. This has now been resolved.

It is not known how the fire could have started.

The New Director of Wildlands: Shaping the Future and Embracing a Childhood Dream

The New Director of Wildlands: Shaping the Future and Embracing a Childhood Dream

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 16, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Julius Minnaar watches from the platform at a polar bear lying lazily in the grass. “It is one of the most beautiful animals we have,” laughs the new director of Wildlands. “He is dangerous, perhaps a bit clumsy, but has a high cuddly nature.” Couldn’t he have imagined even a year ago that he would literally be standing among the animals in Emmen? No, but he clearly enjoys his new job. “A childhood dream? That sounds a bit clichéd. But I have certainly ended up in an honorable place.”

Since June he has taken over from Erik van Engelen, who left this spring. The first hundred days of the ‘Lover era’ are now over. How does the new helmsman view the park and the future?

Minnaar has ended up in a completely different world because of his new job. Because previously he mainly worked in the media (including TROS and STER) and the advertising world. At the beginning of this year, he saw a message on LinkedIn from Van Engelen announcing his departure. Minnaar immediately started to itch. Wouldn’t that be something for him?

“I knew Erik from the marketing world and I called him immediately. We talked on the phone for about an hour. And afterwards I was even more enthusiastic.” It was clearly mutual, because the choice finally fell on him in early June.

His new position is, as mentioned, of a different order. “I have always enjoyed working in the marketing world. But the emphasis is very much on commerce. In a zoo, ticket sales and healthy operations are also important. But there is a bit more to it than only that.”

Minnaar immediately noticed this in the first weeks of his appointment. In June an elephant died. The animal did not recover from the sedative administered to it after it behaved restlessly. “It has had a lot of impact on the employees. I started talking to everyone and there are a lot of emotions involved. All in all, a very intense period. These are things that I did not actually encounter in my previous career.” Working in a zoo is clearly more human work, Minnaar has found.

The new director’s first hundred days were mainly about shaking hands and getting to know each other. He talked to employees, the municipality, province and entrepreneurs. Minnaar walks with colleagues left and right within Wildlands as much as possible.

From the elephant keepers to the Tweestryd roller coaster and in the office garden: it all helps to get a complete picture of the goings-on in the park. One of the most important pillars that Minnaar wants to work on is marketing. In that respect, the run-up has already been made: Wildlands will play the leading role in not one but two television programs next year.

The Emmer zoo can be seen from next spring Real life in the zoo. During the program, the lives of animals are monitored for 24 hours with hidden cameras. The recordings can be seen from next spring.

Farmhouse on Noordeind Street in Emmen Catches Fire, Prompts Street Closure

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 15, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The roof of a farmhouse on Noordeind street in Emmen caught fire this evening. The street was closed by the police.

The fire probably started at the back of the farm. Several fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire in the thatched roof.

On Instagram, Emmer entrepreneur Vasco Rouw lets us know that he is the owner of the farm. “To be clear: it is not the house I live in, but the house that we were going to build. It was empty.”

The entrepreneur says that it is not clear what happened. “Luckily everyone is unhurt and no one was injured or anything. But it is wild, which is intense.”
