PSSI Prioritizes Coach Character and Player Growth Over Tactical Preference
Jakarta, Indonesia – october 24, 2025 - The search for a new head coach for the Indonesian national team will prioritize candidates who embody Indonesian identity and possess a keen ability to develop player potential, according to PSSI Technical Director, Frank Zwiers. The proclamation was made at Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, today.
Zwiers emphasized that while tactical formations are vital, they are secondary to finding a coach who connects with the Indonesian fanbase and can maximize the existing talent pool. “The most important thing for us is to look for profiles that are in line with our vision and identity,” Zwiers stated. “Then the figure must be able to connect with Indonesian identity, with the fanbase. We want to see passion, character, we want to see intensity.”
The PSSI is seeking a coach capable of short-term success while also building a foundation for long-term growth, with the ultimate goal of qualifying for future FIFA World Cups. Zwiers clarified that the search is not limited by geographical boundaries, with potential candidates being considered from both Europe and Asia. “The profile we are looking for is free from the aspect of nationalism, we only want to find the one that is most suitable for Indonesia,” he said.
Zwiers further explained the importance of a coach who can identify and nurture the strengths of individual players. “Formation is secondary. The most critically important thing is that they must be able to recognize the quality of the players, areas that can be developed, and where our benchmarks are, that’s the most important thing,” he added.
