Apple Watch Unleashes “Wrist Flick” Gesture with watchOS 26
New One-Handed Control Streamlines Notifications and Navigation
Select Apple Watch models are now equipped with a novel “Wrist Flick” gesture, a significant enhancement in watchOS 26 that promises more intuitive, one-handed control over the device.
Gesture Simplifies Watch Interaction
This new functionality allows users to dismiss notifications, mute calls, silence alarms, and return to their watch face with a simple flick of the wrist. The gesture leverages the watch’s accelerometer and gyroscope to interpret the motion. This joins the existing “Double Tap” feature as an accessibility and convenience upgrade.
Users can activate or deactivate the Wrist Flick feature through the Settings app, navigating to Gestures and then selecting Wrist Flick. This intuitive control is designed to reduce the need for using a second hand, enhancing usability in various situations.
Exclusive to Latest Models
The innovative Wrist Flick gesture is currently exclusive to the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2. These are the same devices that support the “Double Tap” functionality. While these newer models possess the necessary sensors, Apple indicates that the gesture relies on a new machine learning model.
This suggests that the advanced processing power of the chips within these recent Apple Watch generations is crucial for effectively running the gesture recognition. For context, a study by Statista in early 2024 indicated that over 100 million Apple Watch units were in active use globally, highlighting the potential reach of such user experience improvements (Statista, 2024).

Rollout and Availability
The watchOS 26 beta program is presently underway for developers. A public beta is anticipated to launch later this month, with a widespread release expected in the autumn. This update is part of Apple’s continuous efforts to refine wearable technology interaction.
