Smartphone Sales: Samsung Retains Top Spot as Market Sees Modest Growth in Q3 2023
London – Samsung maintained its position as the world’s leading smartphone vendor in the third quarter of 2023, according to new data from Omdia, despite a generally limited period of global growth. The report reveals a shifting landscape with notable regional variations and a surprising surge in demand for both budget and premium devices.
The global smartphone market shipped 320.1 million units during the July-September period, representing a 3% increase year-over-year. This growth, however, was unevenly distributed, with declines in North America and Greater China offset by robust performance in asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Africa. The findings underscore a growing divide in consumer preference, favoring more affordable options and high-end models while the mid-range segment struggles.
here’s a ranking of the top five smartphone companies based on Q3 2023 shipments:
- Samsung: The South Korean tech giant led the market with 50.1 million units shipped. samsung’s portfolio includes the A07 and Galaxy A17 models.
- Apple: Apple followed with 44.7 million units shipped, driven by strong demand for its Basic iPhone 17, which exceeded initial expectations due to its value proposition.
- Xiaomi: Xiaomi shipped 41.1 million units, experiencing a decline in China following the end of government support programs. However, strong sales in Asia Pacific and other regions mitigated this downturn.
- Vivo: Vivo continued its upward trajectory, shipping 33.3 million units. The company surpassed Huawei in the Chinese market and expanded its presence in asia, africa, and Latin america.
- OPPO: OPPO completed the top five with 28.3 million units shipped.
Omdia analysts note that market growth is currently being propelled by smartphones priced under $100 and those exceeding $700. This trend suggests consumers are either prioritizing affordability or seeking premium features and experiences. Looking ahead, anticipated price increases for new devices coudl potentially constrain growth within the budget phone segment.
