‘Cyberpunk 2077’, released in 2020, was evaluated as a highly anticipated game that could change the history of open world games.

However, at the time of release, it caused great controversy due to numerous bugs, unfinished game composition, and optimization issues, and developer CDPR’s reputation plummeted. CDPR announced that it would rebuild ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ and has continued to update it since. As time passed, ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ improved little by little. Bugs were noticeably reduced and the fun of the game improved. In particular, the 2.0 update that occurred in September of this year has now reached a level where it can be called a complete version. Along with that, the expansion pack ‘Phantom Liberty’ was released.

After many twists and turns, ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ was transformed from a poor work to a masterpiece. And recently, the 2.1 update took the completeness one step further. In December of this year, H2 Interactive released the disc version of ‘Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty’. There were probably many fans who wanted to own this game on disc, so the package release would have been welcome. However, ‘Phantom Liberty’ is provided as a download code.

Originally, ‘Phantom Liberty’ can be played after progressing through the main story for a while, but if you install ‘Phantom Liberty’, you can choose whether to enjoy ‘Phantom Liberty’ while progressing through the main story, or to enjoy ‘Phantom Liberty’ from the beginning. Some expansion packs allow you to proceed only after the game’s ending, but this game has created a separate menu so that you can enjoy the expansion pack right away. Of course, if you start ‘Phantom Liberty’ right away, your character will be developed to a certain level.

The main story is set in Night City, but ‘Phantom Liberty’ takes place in Dogtown. Dogtown is part of Night City, but is ruled by the Barghest, led by former soldier Colonel Hanson. There are no police, making it a much more dangerous area than Night City.

The main character, V, receives a request for help from an unidentified netrunner named Songbird. For reference, Songbird was set as a Korean character. Soon, an incident occurs where the plane carrying the President of the New United States is shot down in Night City. Players must engage in espionage activities, rescue the president, and complete various missions.

The main game, Night City, boasted a considerable size but did not feel well-organized, whereas Dogtown’s map size became smaller, but the density of the game increased. Additionally, the quests given by Mr. Hands sometimes leave a lingering impression that makes you think, compared to the flat quests in the main story. The sub-quests in ‘Phantom Liberty’ are so long that each one requires 30 minutes to complete, and the story line as a whole is substantial. In addition, the directing has been strengthened compared to the main story, so it is fun to watch the story progress. Like the expansion pack for ‘The Witcher 3’, ‘Phantom Liberty’ allows you to once again experience CDPR’s high-quality quests. The level of quests in the main game was not bad, but ‘Phantom Liberty’ expresses the atmosphere of Dogtown, a lawless area, well and leaves a lingering impression on the player, making it feel like the level of completion has been further improved. Johnny Silverhand doesn’t have as much screen time as the main film, but he does a great job here as well.

Systemically, a new tree called Relic has been added to the skill tree, and you can encounter items and equipment that were not in the main game. Cyberware has also changed slightly. The defense function has been changed to cyberware rather than clothing, so there is no need to wear clothes you don’t like because of the defense. Boss battles are also more advanced than the main game, emphasizing the fun of enjoying battles while identifying the weaknesses and attack patterns of powerful bosses. Additionally, with the 2.1 update, you can quickly travel by monorail and see the beautiful scenery. Now, it is no longer a scene that can only be seen in videos, but has also been applied to actual games.

Overall, ‘Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty’ provides considerable fun through dense implementation. If you were disappointed with the sloppy game structure in the past, now, as time has passed for 3 years, the fun of the game has been completed not only through the main game but also through the expansion pack ‘Phantom Liberty’. Now, ‘Cyberpunk 2077’ has been released at the level we expected. There are frame drops and bugs in some scenes, but there are no problems playing the game. The expansion pack ‘Phantom Liberty’ was released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series XLS. It will not be released on previous generation console game consoles.
