With “The Stranger”, François Ozon appropriates Albert Camus in sharp black and white

Ozon‘s “The Stranger” Reimagines Camus‘ Classic with Anti-Colonial Lens

Paris,France – November 5,2025 – François Ozon’s adaptation of Albert Camus’ ⁢”The stranger” premiered today in French-speaking cinemas, presenting a stark ‌black and white reimagining of the existential novel set in 1938 Algiers. This marks Ozon’s fourth ⁣adaptation of literary works since 1998, following “8 femmes,” ‌”Sous le sable,” “Potiche,” and “Grâce à Dieu.”

the film adheres to the core⁣ narrative: Meursault (Benjamin Voisin) receives news of his mother’s death via telegram, attends the funeral with apparent detachment, and later becomes involved in a relationship and a fateful ⁣encounter⁣ leading to a murder. The ensuing trial focuses not only on the act itself, but on Meursault’s perceived lack of grief.

Ozon immediately subverts the novel’s iconic opening, replacing “Today, mom is dead” with “I killed an Arab,” and⁢ concludes the film ⁣with the Cure’s “Killing ‍an Arab.” This choice, alongside a prologue featuring archival footage of Algiers and its French colonial context, underscores a intentional anti-colonialist interpretation.

The film employs a formal dryness and stylistic influence from Robert Bresson, utilizing a ⁣chiseled black and white aesthetic. While Ozon occasionally incorporates voice-over readings ‌of key passages from Camus’ novel, he ⁤also introduces moments of sensualization and didactic musical cues, diverging from Camus’⁣ emphasis⁢ on immanence.

despite challenges in fully ‍revealing the world⁤ to Meursault, the adaptation is lauded as a accomplished cinematic translation of‌ a literary masterpiece.

Starring Benjamin Voisin, Rebecca Marder, and Pierre Lottin, “The‍ Stranger” is now playing in French-speaking cinemas.

Mexican Muxe Artist Lukas Avendaño Presents Unique Theater Performance in Spain

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 8, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Madrid, Spain – Lukas Avendaño, a muxe from an indigenous community in Mexico, is bringing the‌ vibrant cultural tradition of his people to Spain ⁢through ‍a groundbreaking theatrical performance. Muxes ⁢are ⁢men who embody both masculine and⁢ feminine traits, traditionally assuming roles⁣ typically associated with women within their communities – a practice deeply rooted in Zapotec culture.

Avendaño, a choreographer, dancer, and community leader, exemplifies this tradition. He manages drinking water ⁢for his community of roughly 250⁣ families, where‌ five muxes reside, and teaches ‍dance at the local⁤ primary school, ⁢integrating indigenous culture, identity, and musical traditions into his curriculum. He also cares for his 70-year-old mother, being the only one of his five siblings to live nearby.

The‌ arrival of a muxe ⁢ in the Spanish cultural landscape is ⁤significant, offering a unique perspective on gender, sexuality, ⁣and ethnicity. Mexican theatre researcher Antonio Prieto ⁢Stambaugh describes Avendaño as the only Mexican performer⁣ approaching his work with an “explosive ⁢confluence of gender, sexuality and ethnicity.”

Historically, ⁤ muxes have been⁤ integral to the ⁤social fabric ⁣of their communities, contributing to education and embodying‍ a spirit of freedom and acceptance. “If a man,a woman or a muxe are collaborating in⁢ their community, they are all well accepted,” Avendaño explains.”The muxes have ⁣historically contributed to‌ the education of ⁢society⁢ and are a ⁢presentation of freedom, that each person lives and loves as they wish.”

Avendaño’s visit to Spain also serves as a platform to advocate for issues facing his homeland, including ⁢the ‍search for missing persons, the protection ‍of⁤ communal lands from exploitation by large corporations, and‌ the cessation of open-pit ⁣mining concessions to foreign companies. He is a⁤ vocal opponent ⁤of private ⁢land ownership‌ and accumulation, emphasizing ‌the ⁣importance of social justice and respect for indigenous rights.

Del Toro’s Netflix ‘Frankenstein’ Feels Like a Classic

Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein‘ Revives⁣ Gothic Horror for modern Audiences

LOS ANGELES,CA – Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated Frankenstein, now streaming on Netflix, delivers a visually stunning and ⁤emotionally resonant⁣ adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. The 150-minute film, starring Oscar Isaac as Dr.Victor Frankenstein and Jacob ⁢Elordi as ⁤the Creature, eschews simple monster-movie tropes, instead offering a complex ‌exploration of creation, abandonment, and the nature of humanity.

Del Toro’s Frankenstein distinguishes itself by deeply humanizing the Creature,‌ portraying his intellectual awakening and ‍subsequent⁤ suffering⁣ with poignant detail. The film meticulously builds a backstory for Dr. Frankenstein, presenting‍ him not‍ as a purely villainous figure, but as ⁤a driven, ⁤flawed man consumed by ambition. This nuanced approach allows the audience to grapple with the ethical implications of scientific ⁣hubris and the ‍responsibilities of ‍a creator to their creation.

The narrative diverges from some customary interpretations, notably emphasizing the Creature’s inability⁢ to progress intellectually beyond his immediate experiences and the devastating impact of his connection with Elizabeth Lavenza (played by a currently uncredited actress). This leads to a tragic escalation⁣ of events, culminating in a dramatic showdown at the North Pole. While the ‌Creature’s actions during this confrontation-including violence against ‍sailors-present a moral ambiguity, del ⁣Toro frames them as a consequence of a⁢ life marked by rejection and cruelty.

Critics have lauded both Isaac and Elordi’s performances. Isaac’s charisma‌ prevents Dr. Frankenstein from becoming a one-dimensional antagonist, while Elordi delivers a remarkable portrayal of the Creature’s anguish and isolation. The film’s visual design, showcasing both the ⁣beauty and horror of reanimated flesh and 19th-century scientific apparatus, further enhances⁢ the gothic atmosphere.

Del Toro’s purposeful pacing allows for a thorough exploration of the story’s themes, aligning with his previous work, including Hellboy and The Shape of‌ Water. Frankenstein ultimately offers a fresh ⁣perspective on ‌a ⁢timeless tale, prompting viewers‌ to reconsider⁤ the familiar narrative and its enduring relevance. The⁤ film is currently available for streaming on‍ Netflix.

Life Saver: A Director’s Vision of Family and Self-Reliance

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 5, 2025
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

Seoul,South Korea – November 3,2025 ⁢- Director Bang Mi-ri defines salvation as “the act of letting go ⁣of one’s shackles,” as revealed in a ⁤recent interview ‌with Elle⁢ Korea regarding her new⁢ film,The Saver of life, opening November⁣ 5th. The ‍film‌ explores themes of life, death, and the meaning of⁤ family following a tragic fire.

Bang Mi-ri explains the film’s central characters, se-jeong (played ‌by Kim Pureum) and Eun-sook (played by song Seon-mi), ⁤achieve salvation ⁢through mutual ⁤support. Se-jeong, burdened by guilt, finds freedom⁢ through‍ Eun-sook’s⁢ simple affirmation: “Your birthday is a day that can be⁢ celebrated.” conversely, Eun-sook finds purpose in being remembered by Se-jeong.

The director emphasizes her intention to move beyond a “grayish social⁤ accusation” ‌frequently enough associated with⁣ stories of hardship, aiming⁢ rather to showcase Se-jeong’s “vitality.” Bang Mi-ri‍ describes family not as⁤ a matter of blood relation, but‌ as “people who remember each other in a special‌ way,” ⁤celebrating milestones and preserving memories.

Regarding her direction ‍of the lead actresses, Bang Mi-ri requested Kim Pureum portray Se-jeong with “firmness,” as “a child who‍ does not lose his or her⁤ light even when the world is ⁢dark.” For Song Seon-mi, she ‌sought to capture the “ambiguity” of⁤ Eun-sook, a character who appears both potentially‌ benevolent and deceptive.

Reflecting on the filmmaking process,Bang Mi-ri ⁣stated she “felt the importance of people” and realized “nothing can be accomplished alone.” She intends ‍to explore‌ darker themes of‍ human interaction in future projects, describing them as stories of “humans meeting and destroying each other.”
