New York mourns the death of Bernardo Palombo who, with his music, activism and work, especially with the immigrant community, left a deep mark on our city.

Palombo, born in Argentina, but based in New York since the late 1960s, died of cancer at the end of last month shortly before his 76th birthday.

He was a musician, artist and teacher who founded the Taller Latino Americano in 1979, with the idea of serving the immigrant community through music and art.

Since its founding, El Taller has also taught Spanish classes to thousands of New Yorkers, including in dozens of public schools in the city.

All with the very personal seal of its founder.

“This was not only a loss for our community but for the world. Bernardo was a kind of masculine Mercedes Sosa,” said Alexandra Castano.

He added: “By creating the workshop, he was able to actually begin to create community and invite immigrants from all over the place into the space to share their ideas and opinions.”

Palombo became known through his music when he was barely 17 years old with his song “Vendimiador” which became a hit thanks to the Argentine group Los Trovadores.

He also collaborated with artists of the stature of Mercedes Sosa, Philip Glass and Conjunto Libre.

El Taller indicated that they are organizing a commemorative event to remember Palombo’s life and legacy that will take place in mid-May.

Fifty Peruvian Cajones Played in The Bronx in Unique Tribute to Paco de Lucía

Fifty Peruvian cajones played in The Bronx in a unique tribute to the guitarist Paco de LucÃa, who masterfully introduced this instrument to flamenco.

The “cajoneada” is an initiative of the New York Flamenco Festival, which this year celebrates its twenty-third anniversary since its creation.

The tribute took place on Saturday at the Rincón Criollo, a meeting point for the Puerto Rican community where they organize cultural activities all year round.

All the people who wanted to participate in this curious tribute gathered there, where in some cases they received some ideas so that the cajons sounded good and in unison.

Some of the participants brought their own cajons, while the festival organization provided several made of cardboard by ‘Meinl Percussion’ that, despite not having the usual materials for this instrument, sound good for this type of event.

Both the members of this community and residents of The Bronx joined the event in which the origins of the instrument were also explained and how Paco de Lucía adapted it to flamenco, making it today an infallible element in these recitals.

Religious Leaders and Police Department Unite Against Hate Crimes in New York City

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

With songs and prayers, religious leaders and the police department gathered at the ‘From hate to Hope’ event to call out hate crimes in the city.

Bishop Raymond Rivera explains:

“So that there is more understanding, understanding…, and we are unconditionally advocating for peace, not that this does not continue to perpetuate conflicts in our groups in New York, which is the most diverse city in the nation.â€

The event was organized by the Save the People foundation and other groups.

Muhammad Shahidullah, Director, Save the People Foundation

“We want to build a relationship with the other leaders in Queens and let the community know that we are available for any hate incident,” said Save the People Foundation Director Muhammad Shahidullah.

A hate crime is a crime that generally involves violence against a person or an institution, motivated by prejudice against physical appearance, race, religion, sexual preference and other similar reasons.

According to data from the police department, in 2023, 669 hate crimes were reported throughout the city. In total 373 arrests were made.

This activist says that many victims of hate do not report.

“They do not feel comfortable talking to the police, said Japneeth Singh, who with the organization Khalsa Community Patrol helps victims to report crimes, like that of this taxi driver who was attacked while working,†says activist Japneet Singh.

Singh added that the police often do not classify the crime as a hate crime.

The police hate crimes unit ensures that reported cases are investigated to determine whether it is a hate crime or not.

Leaders say they can reach out to community centers in their neighborhood. To report a hate crime you must call 911.

ICE Agents in Five Cities to Wear Body Cameras Under New Policy

ICE Agents in Five Cities to Wear Body Cameras Under New Policy

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 17, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in five cities will begin wearing body cameras when interacting with the public under a new policy announced Wednesday.

The acting director of the agency known as ICE, Patrick J. Lechleitner, said the agency has 1,600 body cameras that will be provided to agents and officials in Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Buffalo and Detroit.

“This is also an important step in continuing to build public trust in our dedicated and professional agents,” Lechleitner said.

The measure is part of the work undertaken by President Joe Biden in 2022 to require federal agents who interact with the public to wear cameras to increase transparency and trust in the police.

ICE is made up of two units: Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents who handle transnational crimes, and officials from the Office of Enforcement and Removal (ERO). in English), which arrest and expel people who are determined not to have the right to remain in the United States.

ICE conducted a six-month pilot program with HSI unit agents in New York, Newark, El Paso and Houston, and another pilot program with ERO officers in Atlanta, Indianapolis and Salt Lake City, according to Lechleitner said.

The goal is to eventually expand the use of body cameras nationwide, but Lechleitner said expanding use of the cameras beyond the first five cities requires more funding from Congress.

“Right now, we can’t do more than those cities,” he commented.

In January, the agency released policies explaining under what situations body cameras should be used, such as when carrying out planned arrest warrants or a deportation order, or when responding to violent disturbances at ICE facilities. The agency specified that the cameras will not be used to record people participating in activities protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Tenants United to Demand Repairs in Rent-Controlled Bronx Apartments | TOPA Law Advocates Speak Out

United for the same cause, and force the owner of the property where they live, to fix the damages in the majority of the rent-controlled apartments, located at 124 East 176th Street in The Bronx.

Or else… this is what they send him as a message…: “The united people will never be defeated…

“Unfortunately, the man who owns this building right now, it seems like he doesn’t know or he doesn’t care and therefore we are going to take it away from him. How are you?”, says Senator “State Senator Gustavo Rivera.

But for that they need the TOPA law, Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act, to be approved in the state legislature, which would give tenants of New York properties whose landlord forgets their obligations and leaves them abandoned, damage to the properties. , with a purpose.

“Part of the plan to not only pay the mortgage, but to make money is to evict the tenants who are paying low rent and bring them in with tenants who are going to pay more rent. So, the solution is for the state to force the owner, in this case David Kleiner, to sell the property to a responsible landlord, or to the tenants themselves, with the financial help of the state,” says assemblywoman Marcela Mitaynes.

“The owner of this building has not fulfilled his responsibility. It’s something very basic. We are not asking you for anything extra. We are saying that these people want to live in dignity, that they have heating, that they have water, that the garbage is collected and those things have not been done,” says Senator Gustavo Rivera.

Carmen López is one of the tenants whose apartment has fungus or mold in several places where the leaks fill with facewash.

“Look at the water, how I catch it here. Look, every time it rains it’s a punch bowl of water. Look, look how they are. Look at these windows. How come they are, leaking all the time, They are black. They are black, black, black…” says López, showing the windows.

Eval Townsend is another affected tenant and also complains of leaks and mold everywhere in her home.

“My mother is sick, she has cancer and every so often they have to use the bathroom outside because hers doesn’t work, plus the humidity affects her health even more. But they don’t care…” says Townsend.

Until the closing of this report, the owner of the property has not given any response.

Breaking the Age Discrimination Barrier: City Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vásquez on Valuing Older Adults

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com March 16, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In our Pura Política segment, we spoke with the City Commissioner for Elderly Care, Lorraine Cortés-Vásquez, about the importance of valuing our older adults.

“It is important to ensure that we have a link between the young population and older New Yorkers,” says Lorraine Cortés-Vásquez.

Age discrimination is one of the last ones left in society, tells us the city commissioner for the care of the senior population.

In conversation with Pura Política, he shares that he is working and encouraging the community to eliminate the belief that an older person has fewer skills at work.

In addition, it emphasizes the focus on health, calling for older people to stay in their communities, instead of being sent to nursing homes, remembering that in our Latin culture, we take care of our elderly.
