New Book Challenges Europe to Redefine Economic Progress Beyond GDP
ROME – Caritas โฃItaliana will present “Going beyond economic growth. Europe’s role in building a fair economy” on Wednesday,November 26th,from 11:00-12:30 at it’s Rome โheadquarters (via โAurelia 796). The โขbook, the secondโข volume in the “Living the change” series published by EDB, arrives as Europe grapples with interconnected economic, environmental, and socialโข crises.
The volume,โ rooted in a prior publication by Caritas Europa – Going beyond economic growth – critically examines the prevailing focus on GDP growth as theโ primary solutionโ to poverty and planetary challenges. It argues for โa fundamental shift in viewpoint, advocating for โa return to the core values of a social Europe andโข a just, enduring economic transition centered โฃon genuine needs and reduced inequality. The book proposes a transformative reflection on the economy, envisioning a Europeโค that prioritizes climate justice, inclusion, and rights, and challenges the notion of limitless growth.
The presentation will feature introductory remarks โฃfrom Paolo Valente, deputy director andโข head of publications of Caritas Italiana, and โค Silvia Sinibaldi, deputy director. Massimo Pallottino, coordinator of the Studiesโ and advocacy unit of Caritas Italiana andโ editor of the volume, and Prof. Andrea Roventini of the Sant’Anna โHigh School in Pisa will also contribute to the discussion.
Drawing from the principles of Catholic social teaching, the book โcalls for a re-evaluationโ of economic priorities, urgingโฃ a move away from a model that compromises social justice and environmentalโข sustainability inโ pursuit of competitiveness.
