Initially available on select ID. family models in Europe, the digital key feature is now compatible with the Apple Watch Series 7 and later, and also Android smartwatches running wear OS 3.0 or higher. Volkswagen first introduced digital key technology via smartphones in 2020, utilizing Near Field Communication (NFC) and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology for secure vehicle access.The new smartwatch integration builds upon this foundation, leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communication between the watch and the vehicle.
To activate the digital key on their smartwatch, Volkswagen owners must first set up the feature through the Volkswagen Car-Net app and complete a pairing process. The key can be transferred to up to five authorized users, providing versatility for family members or trusted individuals. Security is maintained through encrypted communication protocols and the ability to remotely revoke key access.
Currently,the feature supports vehicle locking,unlocking,and starting.
