T20 World Cup: Australia Out, Zimbabwe Qualify & NZ Advance

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Zimbabwe’s remarkable run at the T20 World Cup continued on Wednesday, securing their place in the Super 8 stage after their Group B match against Ireland was abandoned due to rain in Pallekele. The no-result was enough to observe Zimbabwe advance, marking the first time the nation has reached this stage of the tournament.

The qualification came on a day of mixed fortunes for several teams, with Canada’s Yuvraj Samra’s stunning century ultimately proving insufficient to prevent a New Zealand victory in Chennai. New Zealand secured their Super 8 berth with an eight-wicket win, eliminating Afghanistan in the process.

Samra, 19, became the first batter from an associate nation to score a hundred at a T20 World Cup, finishing with 110 runs off 65 balls, including six sixes and eleven fours. His innings guided Canada to a total of 173-4. “I manifested this moment ever since we qualified for the World Cup. Every single day I dreamed about scoring a hundred on this stage,” Samra said, according to the Associated Press. “To do it here, in my first appearance [in Chennai] and as the youngest player in this World Cup – it’s truly a dream come true.”

Despite Samra’s heroics, New Zealand responded emphatically, reaching 176-2 in just 15.1 overs. Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten with 76 runs, supported by Rachin Ravindra’s 59. The pair formed a 146-run partnership after early wickets had fallen, securing the win for the Black Caps.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner missed the match due to illness, described as a “dodgy burger” by reports, even as Lockie Ferguson is currently on paternity abandon but is expected to rejoin the team for the Super 8 stage.

In Mumbai, Nepal registered their third win in T20 World Cup history, defeating Scotland by seven wickets in their final Group C match. Both teams had already been eliminated from contention. Dipendra Singh Airee scored an unbeaten 50 off 23 balls, leading Nepal to 171-3 and victory with four balls to spare. Sompal Kami claimed 3-25 for Nepal, restricting Scotland to 170-7, with Michael Jones scoring 71 for the losing side.

Zimbabwe will now join defending champions India, the West Indies, and South Africa in Group 1 of the Super 8 stage. Sri Lanka will compete in Group 2 alongside England, New Zealand, and either Pakistan or the United States.

Australia’s hopes of progressing in the tournament were dashed earlier in the week, following a 23-run defeat to Zimbabwe on February 13th. Blessing Muzarabani took 4-17 and Brad Evans 3-23 in that match, bowling Australia out for 146 in response to Zimbabwe’s 169-2. The result was described as a “massive upset” and left Australia on the brink of elimination, a fate confirmed by the subsequent results.
