Syringe Found in Seafood: Tourist’s Shocking Phuket Restaurant Experience
A Chinese tourist dining at a Phuket, Thailand hotel restaurant discovered a used syringe concealed within a seafood dish on Tuesday, sparking concern and prompting an investigation by hotel management.
The tourist, who chose to remain anonymous, detailed the incident on Facebook, stating the meal was part of a family celebration involving eight people – five adults and three children. The group had been served a seafood buffet, sharing a single plate of prawns and clams, taking only one or two pieces at a time with serving tongs.
According to the tourist’s account, the discovery occurred as the family neared the end of the plate. A syringe-like object was found amongst the remaining shells. The family immediately ceased eating and photographed the item as evidence before reporting the incident to restaurant staff.
Hotel staff retrieved the contaminated plate and informed management, who acknowledged a serious lapse in food safety standards. An initial response included a 50 percent discount on the meal, along with a promise of a full investigation and a formal explanation the following day. The family reportedly rejected the offered compensation.
The tourist is now seeking advice from online communities regarding necessary medical precautions and has requested that the object be tested in a laboratory, according to reports. As of Saturday, March 21, 2026, neither the hotel nor local health authorities have publicly clarified the next steps in the investigation.
Phuket is a popular destination for Chinese tourists, with a large Chinese diaspora and business community present on the island, according to a guide published by TheBaht.com in September 2024. China has also expressed interest in supporting Phuket’s infrastructure projects, particularly tunnel construction, as reported by The Thaiger in May 2024.
