Sydney Teacher Tayla Lee Brailey Jailed for Sexual Offences With Students
Tayla Lee Brailey, a 32-year-old former Sydney high school teacher, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after pleading guilty to sexual offences against two teenage students. The Parramatta District Court heard that Brailey engaged in sexual acts with a 17-year-old student in his car during a school day and sexually touched a 16-year-old student inside a classroom. The court heard that Brailey added the 16-year-old on social media, exchanging sexually explicit photos before meeting in a classroom, where they kissed and touched each other. In a separate incident, she sent a 16-year-old student a photo of herself in the shower and asked for explicit photos, which he provided, before kissing and fondling him in a classroom.
Parramatta District Court Sentences Former Teacher
The legal proceedings unspooled across multiple charges originating from police investigations that began in August 2024. Brailey pleaded guilty to five offences in total, which included sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old under special care, sexually touching a 16-year-old under special care, and charges relating to using a carriage service to transmit and access child abuse material, according to court documents cited by ABC News and News.com.au. Brailey was first arrested in August 2024 and later re-arrested less than two weeks later for charges related to a second student.
Judge Elizabeth Ryan presided over the sentencing, imposing an aggregate prison term of 15 months. Under the terms of the sentence, Brailey will be eligible for parole on April 24, 2027. The court also ordered her placement on the New South Wales Police child protection register for 15 years. The judge imposed a 9-month sentence for the sexual intercourse charge and 12 months for the sexual touching, with an aggregate term of 15 months.

Court Details First Manic Episode and Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis
Defense submissions and psychological reports tendered to the court provided context regarding Brailey’s mental health at the time of the offences, which occurred initially in July 2023.
Despite accepting that Brailey experienced a medical episode and later expressed remorse, Judge Ryan emphasized that the former teacher took active steps to conceal her conduct. Throughout her offending, Ms Brailey knew what she was doing was wrong but she persisted with it, Judge Ryan stated. The court noted that Brailey has since retrained as an accountant and bookkeeper. Psychological reports indicated Brailey was experiencing a manic episode of bipolar disorder, which the court noted may have contributed to her actions. However, Judge Ryan emphasized that Brailey knowingly concealed her conduct, stating she persisted despite understanding the wrongfulness of her actions.
Victim Impact and Breach of Educational Trust
The court examined the severe psychological toll inflicted on the two teenage victims. Reading from a victim impact statement, Judge Ryan detailed how the younger student suffered from a lack of sleep and flashbacks, ultimately forcing him to leave high school before finishing Year 12 due to overwhelming shame and self-blame. ABC News noted that the student also reported that his high school peers had entirely ceased speaking to him. The younger victim, who had to leave school due to shame, wrote that he felt responsible for the encounter. Family letters submitted to the court highlighted the personal costs to Brailey, including the loss of her husband, job, and reputation.
Judge Ryan stressed that educators carry a profound duty to safeguard minors within the school system. Offences like this cause immense harm to the trust that must exist between families and the education system,
Judge Ryan said, according to ABC News. The court stated that a custodial sentence was mandatory to address the severe violation of that institutional trust.
