Sydney Sweeney gained Weight to Physically Transform for Christy Martin Biopic
Sydney Sweeney underwent a physical transformation, including weight gain, to accurately portray boxing legend Christy martin in an upcoming biopic. The 27-year-old actress departed from her typically glamorous appearance to embody Martin’s physique as a professional athlete.
The dedication to realism underscores the film’s commitment to authentically depicting Martin’s life and career, from her rise as a pioneering female boxer to surviving a brutal attack by her then-husband and manager, james Martin. The biopic, Christy, is slated for theatrical release on november 7, offering a comprehensive look at the boxer’s journey and legacy.
Sweeney’s transformation was noted by those involved in the production. “I was stunned by the change in her appearance,” director James Mangold told W magazine. “I had only seen her as an adorable, tough moppet with late-’80s hair, ready to box.Sydney was happiest when she was in the ring punching and being punched. It was shocking to see her being so glamorous.”
The film chronicles Martin’s boxing career, which began in 1989 and culminated in winning the World Boxing female super welterweight title in 2009. She continued boxing until 2012. Beyond her athletic achievements, the biopic will also address the harrowing 2010 attack by James martin, which led to his arrest and a 25-year prison sentence after being convicted of attempted second-degree murder.
Christy Martin’s impact extends beyond the ring; in 2016, she became the first woman boxer inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, followed by her 2020 induction into the International boxing Hall of Fame – the first year women were eligible for consideration. Christy aims to capture the full scope of her influence and resilience.
