Sydney Sweeney Addresses ‘christy’ Box Office performance, Highlights FilmS Impact Beyond Numbers
Sydney Sweeney has spoken out following the disappointing box office run of her boxing biopic, Christy, emphasizing the film’s profound impact despite its commercial failure. the film, which premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival and released in theaters earlier this month, has struggled to find an audience, becoming one of the year’s biggest box office bombs.
Though, Sweeney underscored the film’s importance in raising awareness about domestic violence and offering hope to survivors, stating, “Proud of the film David made. proud of the story we told. proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. this experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
Christy depicts the harrowing true story of boxing legend Christy Martin’s survival of severe physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her ex-husband and former manager, Jim. Martin, now 57, met Jim when she was 22 and he was 47. He initially coached her, and their relationship evolved into a marriage in 1991 marked by ongoing abuse. In 2010, Jim shot and stabbed Martin multiple times when she attempted to leave him, nearly fatally wounding her. He was convicted of attempted second-degree murder in 2012 and sentenced to 25 years in prison, later dying in custody last November.
sweeney continued, “This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. thru our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence.” She expressed hope that the film would empower others, stating, “We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives. if christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety then we will have succeeded.”
Concluding her statement, Sweeney affirmed, “So yes I’m proud. Why? as we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you christy. i love you.”
