Steel City Choristers Share Music Across Cultures on Berlin Tour
Berlin, germany – The Steel City Choristers, a Sheffield-based choir, recently returned from a accomplished tour of Berlin, Germany, where they performed at the Berlin Cathedral and other venues. The choir, comprised of boys aged 9-18, showcased their musical talents to international audiences, even introducing their cabaret concert in German.
During their trip, the choristers participated in a livestreamed Eucharist service at the Berlin Cathedral, a recording of which is available on YouTube.
The choir’s repertoire included works by German, Austrian, and English composers. Kate Caroe, Chair of Trustees at the charity, highlighted pieces such as Clara schumann’s Abendfeier in Venedig, Max Reger’s nachtlied, and selections by Anton Bruckner, alongside compositions by Hubert Parry and Edward Bairstow.
“A really important lesson for our children to learn is that music can bring people together, even across language barriers and different cultures,” Caroe stated. “The trip was also about having a lot of fun with our singing: working hard as a team, getting to know each other and drawing the children on in their love of singing that we all share.”
The Steel City Choristers where founded in 2019 and provide a high-quality choral education to boys from diverse backgrounds across Sheffield and South Yorkshire. The choir operates as a registered charity, relying on funding from trusts, foundations, and individual donations.
While the Berlin tour received generous support, the choir supplemented funding with its own core resources. To ensure the continuation of their work and future opportunities for the choristers, a fundraising campaign titled Here to Stay is planned for later this year, coinciding with the choir’s fifth anniversary.
A fundraising concert featuring music from the Berlin tour will be held on September 20th at 7pm at St Mary’s Church, Ecclesfield. admission is by donation, with contributions gratefully accepted at the door. No advance booking is required.
