State of the Union 2024: Trump’s Speech, Tariffs & Key Takeaways

by Emma Walker – News Editor

President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday night as his administration began implementing reworked global tariffs at a rate of 10%, a policy recently challenged and defeated at the Supreme Court. The speech, delivered at 9 p.m. ET, came amid growing voter concerns about the economy and escalating tensions with Iran, according to NBC News.

Trump used the nationally televised address to address what he termed “affordability” issues facing American families, a topic he acknowledged has drawn criticism throughout his current term. The speech also touched on foreign policy, particularly the increasingly fraught relationship with Iran, with U.S. And Iranian negotiators scheduled to meet later this week to discuss nuclear security. Threats of retaliation from Iran have grown as the possibility of land strikes increases, according to Military.com.

The address unfolded against a backdrop of political division, with more than two dozen congressional Democrats boycotting the speech. Progressive groups organized counter-events in Washington D.C. To protest Trump’s policies. Even the U.S. Women’s Olympic hockey team declined an invitation to attend, signaling broader dissatisfaction with the administration.

The President’s speech also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where he highlighted his administration’s commitment to reconstruction efforts. He pledged a $10 billion investment through the newly established Gaza Board of Peace, despite estimates suggesting the total cost of reconstruction could range from $50 to $100 billion.

Tuesday also marked the four-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, adding another layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape addressed during the speech. The administration did not offer any new policy announcements regarding Ukraine during the address.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced that Erika Kirk, the widow of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was among the guests invited to attend the State of the Union address.

As of late Tuesday, U.S. And Iranian negotiators had not announced a date or location for their scheduled meeting regarding nuclear security, leaving the prospect of further escalation unresolved.
