LIVE: Ukraine Seeks Boost in Long-Range Capabilities as Winter Approaches
LONDON, October 24, 2025 – British Prime Minister Keir starmer is urging increased support for Ukraine, particularly in the provision of long-range weaponry, ahead of a meeting with a coalition of 26 european nations supporting Kyiv. “I believe we can do more in terms of means, particularly long-range means,” Starmer stated before the afternoon gathering. He also highlighted the importance of ongoing discussions regarding “security guarantees” for Ukraine.
Downing Street indicated Starmer will advocate for utilizing frozen Russian assets to finance the delivery of “long range systems” and bolster ukrainian defense efforts, following Russia’s large-scale invasion.
The call for increased aid follows a meeting between Starmer and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, their third in the UK this year, after Zelensky received an audience with king Charles III.
Starmer, co-leading the coalition with french President Emmanuel Macron, aims to “put Ukraine in the strongest possible position heading into winter,” as Moscow intensifies attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, threatening power and heating access for the population.
Ukraine currently manufactures some long-range missiles – including Flamingo and Neptune – and receives Scalp missiles from France and Storm Shadows from the UK, though in limited quantities. Requests for German Taurus missiles have been unsuccessful, and the United States has so far declined to supply Tomahawk missiles, despite zelensky’s appeals. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that delivering such weapons would represent “a new escalation.”
