Spotify Gives Users More Control Over Music Recommendations
Stockholm, Sweden - February 10, 2025 – Spotify has rolled out a new feature allowing users to refine their music recommendations by excluding specific songs from influencing their personalized ”taste profile.” The update addresses concerns that all listening activity – including music played for children, during relaxation, or with family - was impacting algorithm-driven playlists like Finding weekly and Spotify Wrapped.
Currently,Spotify’s recommendation engine analyzes all user-played music to suggest new tracks. However, this broad data collection sometimes resulted in unwanted recommendations.
“With this new feature, users can mark certain songs so as not to affect the taste profile. Consequently, music recommendations will be more personal and as desired,” reported TechCrunch on Thursday.
The feature is available to both free and premium Spotify users. To exclude a song, users simply select the track and tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner of the screen, then choose the option “Exclude from your taste profile.”
While welcomed, initial user feedback suggests the feature could be further improved. Spotify may consider options like user profile switching or voice command integration to allow for more immediate and accurate session-based tagging of listening context.
