Frankfurt Launches Inaugural International Sports film Festival
Frankfurt, Germany – Teh city of Frankfurt is set to host its first international sports film festival, kicking off on September 25th with a special screening of “Eintracht Frankfurt – In diesem Jahr,” the documentary chronicling the football club’s 2022 europa League victory. The four-day event aims to fuse the emotional power of sports and cinema, showcasing a diverse range of athletic pursuits and fostering a new cultural identity for the city.
Organized by Florian Joeckel of Massif Central and mixed martial arts professional Max Coga, the festival will present films covering everything from football, cycling, and triathlon to climbing, surfing, and combat sports. The event’s launch underscores Frankfurt’s growing ambition to position itself as a dynamic hub for both cultural experiences and economic growth, attracting visitors and invigorating the city center. All screenings are free to the public.
The festival’s program boasts several premieres, including a documentary about Rhön-based logger Danny Martin and “hard Work – the Story of BK West United.” Accompanying a screening of the Dutch film “Nieuwe Helden” will be a talk featuring Frankfurt cycling professional John Degenkolb. International selections include “Foosballers” and “Iron Maiden FC.”
Wirtschaftsdezernentin Stephanie Wüst (FDP) serves as the festival’s patron, emphasizing its contribution to strengthening Frankfurt’s creative landscape. “The interplay of economy, culture, and sport is a win for the entire Frankfurt location – it attracts people, revitalizes the city center, and increases attractiveness,” Wüst stated. Local businesses, restaurants, and sports institutions are also contributing to the event.
A jury comprised of ARD commentator florian Naß, former Olympian Kathrin Klaas, and musician Henni Nachtsheim will present awards on September 28th at Massif E in categories including “Best Sports Film,” “Best Actor,” “Best Actress,” “Social Engagement Award,” and “Best Fanfilm.” Three figures from the world of sport will also receive a “People Award.” A special screening of the winning films for school groups is scheduled for September 29th, with a final public showing of the award-winning selections to follow.
