Specifications of cheaper Alder Lake models: From 12600 lower without small cores

This year, Intel introduced the 125W Alder Lake generation models: Core i9-12900K (F), Core i7-12700K (F) and Core i5-12600K (F). Next year will be followed by 65W models (which will be significantly more) as well as economical 35W “T” models. For the “T” series, whose availability is probably the most remote, only the boost bars of large cores and cache capacity are usually known. What is not yet known for either the 65W or 35W series is the consumption limit, so one value is currently given in the “TDP” column.

Although Intel speaks of small cores as energy-efficient, paradoxically, they are not used at all in energy-efficient desktop models. While the 125W Core i5-12600K carries 6 large and 4 small cores, the 65W Core i5-12600 and 35W Core i5-12600T have no small cores. Thus, in the context of the desktop – rather than as a power optimization tool – small cores act as a tool for extracting multicore power in 125W models, meeting high power limits that no longer allow large cores to be used to achieve competitive multicore. performance. After all, reviews have shown that the large cores of Alder Lake are energy efficient in themselves – just don’t suffocate them at around 5 GHz. If a few hundred MHz is discounted, performance will fall by a few percent, but consumption will be many tens of percent – to a level that corresponds to the process of this generation.

Intel uses two types of silicon in its desktop: Physically 8 + 8 cores and 6 + 0 cores. It is clear from the specifications which model uses which silicon (or all models with 0 small cores cost 6 + 0).
