Sony ECM-778 Shotgun Microphone with Compact Design Introduced

Sony Unveils Compact, High-Resolution Shotgun Microphone

For filmmakers needing high-quality audio in a small package, **Sony** has announced the ECM-778 shotgun microphone, offering flexibility on set and clear sound capture.

Compact Design, High-Quality Audio

The ECM-778 is 176mm long and weighs 102g. **Sony** reports the microphone features a newly designed capsule, precision-machined brass acoustic tube, and dedicated electronic circuit board. These features work together to deliver clear high frequencies and stable mid-low frequencies, capturing both voices and ambient sounds with spatial detail.

Directional Sound Capture

**Sony** has engineered the ECM-778 to have sharp forward directivity. By suppressing sound from the sides and rear across the frequency range, the microphone helps isolate subjects while reducing environmental noise. This feature is especially useful when recording in acoustically challenging or confined locations.

Varied Environment Features

For practical use, the ECM-778 has a built-in low-cut filter, minimizing low-frequency noise from wind or handling. It comes with two windscreen options—foam and fur—for diverse recording conditions. It is estimated that unwanted noise can ruin up to 70% of field recordings (Pro Tools Expert 2023).

Durable and Compatible

Constructed with a machined aluminum exterior, the microphone reduces external vibrations and electrical noise, while also being lightweight. The ECM-778 uses an XLR connection, making it compatible with external audio recorders and cameras that have XLR inputs, including **Sony** Cinema Line and Alpha mirrorless cameras.

Developed With Sound Engineer Input

During its development, film sound engineers provided feedback on the ECM-778. **Sony** emphasizes the microphone’s ability to maintain consistent tonal characteristics at different distances, important when shifting between close-up and wider shots.
