Sony Allegedly Ending PC Ports of Single-Player PlayStation Hits

June 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

PlayStation has announced it will cease releasing exclusive games on personal computers, according to multiple reports, citing insufficient demand for titles like “God of War” and “Horizon Zero Dawn” on the platform. The decision, confirmed by Sony Interactive Entertainment executives, marks a shift in the company’s strategy as it prioritizes console-focused development.

Jason Schreier, a journalist with reported insights into Sony’s internal decisions, stated that exclusive PlayStation titles failed to generate significant revenue on PC, contributing to the move. “The financial returns from PC ports of single-player campaigns were not commensurate with the resources invested,” Schreier said, referencing internal data shared by sources familiar with the company’s planning.

Sony’s chief financial officer, Hiroshi Tsuchiya, emphasized in a recent investor call that the PlayStation 5’s ecosystem remains central to the brand’s success. “Consoles provide a unique experience that PC platforms cannot fully replicate,” Tsuchiya said, though he did not directly address the PC port decision. The company has not yet commented publicly on the shift.

The move aligns with broader industry trends, as developers increasingly focus on platform-specific content. Konzolista.cz, a Czech gaming outlet, reported that Sony’s decision to stop PC releases could signal a longer-term strategy to differentiate PlayStation from competitors like Xbox, which has expanded its PC gaming initiatives. “This could deepen the divide between console and PC audiences,” said analyst Petr Novak, though he noted the impact remains uncertain.

Independent studios that previously partnered with Sony to port games to PC have expressed concern. “We’ve invested in optimizing titles for PC, only to see demand wane,” said a representative from a undisclosed development studio, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The representative added that smaller publishers may face challenges in securing exclusives without Sony’s support.

PlayStation’s 2023 fiscal report, released in April, showed a 12% year-over-year increase in console sales, outpacing PC gaming revenue growth. The company has not provided specific figures on PC game sales but has indicated that future exclusives will be designed “exclusively for console hardware.”

The shift has sparked debate among PC gamers, who argue that ports of major titles could expand the audience for PlayStation’s narrative-driven games. “Exclusives like ‘The Last of Us’ deserve a broader reach,” wrote user “GamerX123” on a gaming forum. However, Sony’s internal documents, obtained by Zing.cz, suggest that the technical and financial costs of PC ports outweighed potential gains.

Industry observers are monitoring how the decision affects third-party developers. Microsoft, which has aggressively promoted cross-platform play, has not commented on Sony’s move. Meanwhile, Nintendo, which has historically avoided PC ports, has seen its console sales remain stable, though its market share has declined in recent years.

The next step for Sony remains unclear. The company has not announced plans to re-release older PC ports or to revisit the decision in the future. A spokesperson for Sony Interactive Entertainment stated, “Our priority is to deliver the best possible experience for PlayStation players, and we will continue to evaluate our strategies accordingly.”
