As the rainy season commences across West and Central Africa, a stark warning has emerged: an estimated 80,000 children face a heightened risk of contracting cholera.

Spreading Epidemics Fuel Cross-Border Fears

The United Nations highlighted concerns over active cholera outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nigeria. These situations significantly elevate the danger of the disease spreading to neighboring nations, according to UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq.

The UN official also noted that Chad, the Republic of Congo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and Togo are currently battling ongoing cholera epidemics. Niger, Liberia, Benin, the Central African Republic, and Cameroon are being closely monitored due to their vulnerability to the disease.

UNICEF Ramps Up Vital Aid Efforts

Farhan Haq stated that UNICEF has been actively supplying essential health, water, hygiene, and sanitation resources to treatment facilities and communities since the initial outbreaks. These efforts are crucial for combating the spread.

Beyond providing cholera vaccinations in affected regions and urging families to seek immediate medical attention and adopt better hygiene, the spokesperson stressed the critical need for more robust and widespread interventions. Such measures are imperative to prevent further transmission and successfully contain the outbreak across the continent.

UNICEF’s West and Central Africa division requires an immediate infusion of $20 million. This funding is earmarked for the next three months to bolster emergency responses in health, water, and sanitation, as well as enhance risk communication and community engagement strategies.

The current situation underscores broader global health challenges. For instance, in 2022, cholera outbreaks affected over 30 countries worldwide, leading to thousands of deaths, demonstrating the persistent threat of this preventable disease (World Health Organization).
