Solid-State Batteries: Changan to Launch in 2026, 1500km Range Possible

Solid-State Batteries: Changan to Launch in 2026, 1500km Range Possible

February 28, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Chinese automaker Changan Automobile plans to begin trial installations of solid-state batteries in both robots and electric vehicles before the end of the third quarter of 2026, with mass production slated for 2027. The announcement, made on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange platform, marks a significant step toward the commercialization of the technology, which promises increased range and improved safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Changan’s solid-state battery, branded “Golden Bell,” is projected to achieve an energy density of 400 Wh/kg, potentially enabling an electric vehicle range exceeding 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) on a single charge, according to company statements reported by multiple Chinese news outlets. The company claims the battery incorporates AI-powered diagnostics to enhance safety by 70%.

The “Golden Bell” brand encompasses eight battery cell variants, including those utilizing liquid, semi-solid, and solid-state electrolytes. Changan anticipates a total production capacity of up to 150 GWh once fully scaled, though the distribution of this capacity across the different battery types remains unclear. The company intends to release more detailed information regarding the all-solid-state battery in the third quarter of 2026.

Changan is not alone in its pursuit of solid-state battery technology. Dongfeng Motor has also begun testing its own solid-state battery in extreme cold weather conditions, boasting an energy density of 350 Wh/kg and a projected range of over 1,000 km. Dongfeng aims to integrate these batteries into production vehicles later this year, targeting a September rollout. Other Chinese manufacturers, including BYD, Chery, SAIC, and GAC, are actively developing similar technologies, as is battery giant CATL.

The push for solid-state batteries extends beyond China, with major international automakers such as Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Honda also investing heavily in research and development. While solid-state batteries have been touted for years, 2026 appears to be a pivotal year for their potential market entry, with several companies now setting concrete timelines for initial deployment.

Changan is also collaborating with CATL on the development of sodium-ion batteries, demonstrating a diversified approach to next-generation battery technology. The company recently launched the Nevo A06 sedan equipped with a CATL sodium-ion battery pack.
