Soldiers Announce Coup in Benin; President Denies Takeover

Cotonou, Benin – Soldiers appeared on national television Wednesday announcing a coup d’état, but the Benin presidency swiftly denied the claims, stating President Patrice Talon remains in control. The broadcast, which aired on state-owned ORTB, alleged the dissolution of Benin’s institutions, suspension of the constitution, and closure of borders.

The announcement sparked confusion and concern, coming amidst reports of gunfire near the presidential palace in Cotonou. A source close to President Talon told agence France-Presse (AFP) that the president was safe and that a small group had temporarily seized control of the television station. The source asserted that the regular army had regained control of the city and country, and that “everything [would] return to normal” shortly.

According to a military source, the coup plotters did not seize Talon’s residence or the presidential office. The French Embassy in Benin reported shooting at Camp Guezo, near the president’s official residence, and urged French citizens to remain indoors. AFP journalists confirmed soldiers had blocked access to the presidential office and state television, as well as several other areas including hotels and districts housing international institutions. However, the airport remained unaffected and daily life continued largely as normal throughout Cotonou.

Benin has a history of political instability, marked by several coups and attempted coups as gaining independence from France in 1960.President Talon, who came to power in 2016, is nearing the end of his second term in 2026 – the constitutional limit. Recent political developments include the disqualification of the main opposition party from upcoming elections, leaving the ruling party to compete against a “moderate” opposition. While credited with economic development, Talon has faced criticism for alleged authoritarian tendencies. The situation remains fluid as authorities work to fully secure control and address the attempted disruption.
