Wiesn Sees Fiber Optic Upgrade as Mobile Networks Strain Under First Weekend Surge
Munich,Germany - The first weekend of Oktoberfest (Wiesn) saw unprecedented demand on mobile networks, while simultaneously marking a milestone in the festival’s digital infrastructure: three beer tents were connected to landlines via fiber optic cables for the first time. The move by Telekom aims to bolster connectivity amidst the massive influx of visitors, with plans for a phased replacement of existing copper lines in the coming years.
The surge in data usage during the opening weekend highlighted the strain on existing infrastructure. While most tent operators and showmen still rely on traditional copper lines, Telekom’s fiber optic installation represents a first step toward enabling enhanced digital services for both Wiesn attendees and operators. This upgrade comes as the Munich main station, a key transportation hub for the festival, handles a massive volume of visitors arriving by long-distance train, S-Bahn, tram, and subway.
