Snapchat to charge for “Memories” Storage, Users Face Data Loss
Vienna, Austria – October 9, 2025 – Snapchat users who exceed a five-gigabyte storage limit for their “Memories” – saved photos and videos – will soon face data loss unless they subscribe to a paid plan, the company announced today. While a specific launch date for Austria remains unclear, Snapchat confirmed the change is slated for implementation at least one year from now.
The move marks a shift for the platform, which previously offered unlimited “Memories” storage. Users exceeding the limit will lose their moast recent content, while older recordings will be preserved. Snapchat is offering users the option to download their entire archive as a temporary workaround before the changes take effect, though download availability will be communicated via email and may take “several hours or days.”
Snapchat acknowledges the difficulty of monetizing a previously free feature but asserts the subscription model is necessary to “continue to invest in improving Memories for our entire community.” over a trillion videos and photos have been saved using the feature as its introduction.
The proclamation has sparked backlash online, with users expressing frustration and concern. One user, “Heath was here,” posted a video criticizing the change, while another TikTok user reported having 81 gigabytes of saved memories. Some users are predicting the change will lead to the “decline of Snapchat.”
Despite similar outcry following a recent app update, Snapchat’s daily user numbers ultimately rebounded after a brief stagnation, suggesting the platform may weather this latest wave of criticism.
