Sinner Claims China Open title, Eyes Shanghai Masters
BEIJING (AP) – Jannik Sinner secured his third title of the season and 21st career victory Wednesday, defeating American teenager Learner Tien 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the China Open. The win serves as a strong momentum boost for Sinner as he prepares for the Shanghai Masters.
Sinner’s dominant performance against the 19-year-old Tien, in the young player’s first tour final, marks a return to form following his U.S. open disappointment. The victory also positions him as a frontrunner in Shanghai, particularly after Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament due to an ankle injury sustained at the Japan Open, which he won Tuesday.
“We will try to improve and push for more and let’s see what the rest of the season looks like, but I am very happy,” Sinner stated after the match.
In concurrent WTA 1000 action, American Emma Navarro achieved a meaningful upset, defeating top-seeded Iga Świątek 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the fourth round. This win represents Navarro’s fourth career victory against a top-five ranked opponent, with Świątek hampered by 70 unforced errors.
The strong showing by American players continued with Jessica Pegula’s 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1 victory over Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine. This result marks the first time since the tournament’s inception in 2004 that four American women – Navarro, Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Amanda Anisimova – have reached the quarterfinal stage. Gauff is scheduled to face Eva Lys on Thursday.
