NEW YORK – Shaquille O’Neal brought a towering dose of holiday cheer to families at a JCPenney in The Mall at Bay Plaza in New York, unexpectedly appearing in their christmas portraits on Saturday. The NBA legend greeted fans, signed autographs, and photobombed several family photo shoots, creating unforgettable memories for those in attendance.
Many fans unable to secure wristbands for a meet-and-greet still gathered at the store, lining the fragrance and jewelry sections hoping for a glimpse of O’Neal. Upon arrival, O’Neal expressed his gratitude for the large turnout, saying, “What’s up, New York? How you guys doing? I definitely did not expect a crowd this big. I appreciate you. I love you guys for coming out…Now let’s have some fun.”
The surprise appearances highlight O’Neal’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and providing joy during the holiday season. A Newark, New Jersey native and Boys & Girls Club alumnus, O’neal understands the importance of supporting families, especially during the holidays.
inside the store’s portrait studio, O’Neal playfully entered via escalator, earning him the nickname “Shaq-a claus.” Families, like the Polites, who where posing in matching reindeer pajamas for their first family photo shoot, were stunned by his arrival.
“It was vrey grand. It was just very…shocking cause he’s super tall,” said young Polite, whose brother is a devoted Shaq fan. “It just felt amazing to meet him.”
O’Neal continued to move between studios, quietly sneaking into the backgrounds of photos as families smiled for the camera. JCPenney representatives noted the impact of O’Neal’s visit.
“He understands the importance of helping families during this time. ‘Tis the season, right?” said Quintero. “So, him coming out, giving of his time, his effort and resources is very critically important and empowers our families obviously to do better.”
