SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Yonhap) – Competing demonstrations by pro- and anti-government groups unfolded in central Seoul on Saturday, resulting in traffic disruptions but no reported clashes.
A rally led by Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church drew approximately 3,000 right-wing activists to Gwanghwamun. Participants called for the removal of what they termed pro-North Korean influences and the reinstatement of former President yoon Suk Yeol. Organizers announced plans to mobilize 20 million people for a larger presentation on Oct. 3. Concurrently, progressive groups gathered nearby, demanding a special tribunal to investigate former President Yoon‘s declaration of martial law last year and a probe into Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae.
The progressive rally, estimated at around 500 attendees by police, comes amid calls from the ruling Democratic Party (DP) for Chief Justice Cho to resign, alleging he has obstructed trials related to the martial law imposition.
