FDA Commissioner Makary Outlines Priorities, Defends Actions in Wide-Ranging Discussion

Mifepristone Access: A Data-driven Approach

Dr.Marty Makary, commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), addressed concerns regarding the availability of mifepristone, an abortion pill, in the United States.

While stating he has no plans to take action to restrict access, Dr. Makary emphasized a commitment to monitoring incoming data. There is an ongoing set of data that is coming into the FDA on mifepristone, he said. So if the data suggests something or tells us that there’s a real signal, we can’t promise we’re not going to act on that data.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Balancing Public Opinion and Scientific Evidence

Dr. Makary also addressed the contentious issue of COVID-19 vaccines, notably concerning children. He acknowledged the prevailing sentiment among many Americans regarding booster shots for young, healthy children.

Most Americans do not believe in the COVID booster shot for young, healthy children at this point, Dr. Makary stated. So if he does something with the COVID vaccine in children, I think it’ll be warmly welcomed by a lot of Americans. This was in reference to Robert F.Kennedy Jr.’s consideration of withdrawing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation for the COVID-19 shot for children.

Despite this, Dr. Makary affirmed his belief in the overall effectiveness of vaccines. Vaccines save lives, and any death from a vaccine-preventable illness is a tragedy, he said, while also noting he has not received any COVID boosters himself.

FDA Priorities: Efficiency and Root Cause Analysis

expediting drug approvals is a key priority for the FDA under Dr. Makary’s leadership, reflecting a broader effort to enhance efficiency within the agency. However, he cautioned against relying solely on medication as the solution to health issues.

More medication is not the answer, dr. Makary emphasized. We’ve got to start looking at root causes.

in line with this approach, the FDA plans to announce a ban on two petroleum-based food dyes in the coming weeks, bringing the total number of additives being removed from the market to nine. We’re asking industry to work with us, he said, as I don’t think any of us truly believe that they’re entirely safe.

Defense of Peter Marks’ Firing

Dr. Makary addressed the dismissal of Peter marks, who previously oversaw the FDA’s vaccine center. He stated that testimony before the House Judiciary Committee confirmed Marks had removed two career scientists from the agency because they disagreed with him about the COVID shot in kids, and as a result,he pushed them out.
