In the sex trafficking and racketeering trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, the defense team suggests he may not testify, which could drastically alter the proceedings. This critical decision comes after weeks of testimony from various witnesses, with the prosecution close to resting its case.

Defense Strategy and Potential Delays

The defense, led by attorney Marc Agnifilo, anticipates completing its case within five days or less. Had Combs taken the stand, the process might have extended significantly. The prosecution’s primary witnesses, Cassie Ventura and “Jane,” each needed about a week of testimony.

The jury might begin deliberations in the coming week, based on the pace of the defense and prosecution’s closing arguments. The court, according to Judge Arun Subramanian, seeks to conclude the trial before the July 4th holiday.

The Risks of Testifying

Previously, attorney Agnifilo noted that Combs was very keen on telling his narrative. Suge Knight, a rival, suggested Combs should testify to appear more human. However, legal analysts have voiced concerns, including Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor. According to Rahmani, cross-examination would become a real possibility. Furthermore, anything said could become evidence in ongoing civil lawsuits against Combs.

Entertainment lawyer Lisa Bonner suggested Combs is unlikely to testify. She stated, “there is nothing to gain, especially if you have any skeletons in your closet,” as well as the risk of perjury.

Potential Trump Pardon?

Speculation continues about a potential pardon from former President Donald Trump, who has pardoned other rappers. Trump noted he would review the facts, adding he hadn’t spoken to Combs before entering politics. It’s been reported that Combs’s associates have contacted Trump allies to set up a possible pardon. Yet, some Trump officials have expressed reservations due to the seriousness of the allegations, as reported by Rolling Stone.

Evidence Presented

The jury saw videos depicting Combs’s “freak offs,” causing visible discomfort for some jurors. These explicit videos were not shared with the public. In court, phone records after a 2016 incident were reviewed, where Combs was seen attacking Ventura. CNN reported Ventura’s response to Combs was, “sick for thinking it’s okay to do what you’ve done.”

The Charges Against Combs

Sean Combs faces five federal charges: sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution, and racketeering conspiracy. He has pled not guilty to all accusations. Notable witnesses include Cassie Ventura, who testified about a 2018 rape. Also testifying were Kid Cudi and two unnamed women, Mia and Jane, who are alleged victims.

As of 2024, about 13% of federal cases go to trial, highlighting the significant decision facing Combs (U.S. Courts).
