Scotland’s Young Musicians Hit High Notes in Berlin to Boost Brand Scotland
Berlin, Germany – A vibrant showcase of Scotland’s burgeoning musical talent is set to captivate Germany this week, as young musicians from the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland (NYOS) take centre stage in Berlin. The initiative is a key component of Scottish Secretary Ian Murray‘s aspiring Brand Scotland campaign, aimed at promoting Scottish excellence globally and attracting vital inward investment.
The prestigious event, hosted at the British Ambassador’s residence in Berlin, will see NYOS, alongside guest soloist Ryan Corbett, perform for a distinguished audience of business leaders and government officials. Attendees will represent key sectors including energy, space, technology, life sciences, and food and drink, providing a prime opportunity to highlight Scotland’s diverse economic strengths.
This cultural diplomacy mission is part of a broader trade visit by Mr.Murray to Germany, designed to strengthen bilateral ties and underscore Scotland’s appeal to international investors. The visit follows the recent signing of a new treaty between the UK and Germany, signalling a renewed focus on European relationships. Mr.Murray’s engagement in Berlin is a direct effort to leverage this positive momentum for Scotland’s economic benefit.
“Scotland’s cultural excellence is one of our greatest assets in attracting international investment and driving economic growth,” stated Scottish Secretary Ian Murray. “The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland represents some of our most remarkable musical talent. I’m delighted that they are able to join me in Berlin, and this performance will demonstrate Scottish culture at its finest.”
He added, “My Brand Scotland campaign is about selling all that is fantastic about Scotland to the world, to encourage both exports and inward investment in Scotland, and I’m very pleased that we have been able to fund this event in Berlin. Brand Scotland is a key part of the UK Government’s Plan for Change, bringing real rewards for people in Scotland.”
The breakfast event, aptly nicknamed “Symphony and Sausages,” is made possible by a £2,700 grant from the Scotland Office Brand Scotland fund. This initiative is the first in a series of global events to be supported by the Brand Scotland initiative through the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development office (FCDO) network.NYOS will also be performing at the esteemed Young Euro Classic festival, presenting the European premiere of a new accordion concerto by acclaimed Scottish composer Jay Capperauld, conducted by the renowned Catherine Larsen-Maguire.
Guests at the “Symphony and Sausages” breakfast will be treated to a full Scottish culinary experience, featuring smoked salmon, haggis, and black pudding, with the embassy chef specially preparing potato scones for the occasion. The authentic Scottish spread will be complemented by iconic beverages and treats like Irn Bru and Walkers Shortbread.
The Berlin visit precedes a notable speech by Mr. Murray in Edinburgh, where he will elaborate on the profound impact of Scottish culture on social cohesion and economic prosperity, highlighting the UK Government’s considerable investment in the nation’s cultural landscape.
