Santos Alomar, a pillar of Puerto Rican baseball and patriarch of a renowned sports dynasty, died today outside his residence. Dr. Pedro Ortiz Lara certified the death at the scene,and La Monserrate Funeral Home is handling arrangements. He was 80 years old.
Born in Salinas, Puerto Rico, in 1943, Alomar began his Major League Baseball career in 1964 with the milwaukee Brewers, launching a career that spanned more than a decade. He played for the Atlanta braves, new York Mets, Chicago White Sox, California Angels, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers.
Following his playing career, Alomar transitioned to coaching in MLB, serving with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, and San Diego Padres. He was known for his baseball knowledge and leadership.
Alomar also left a important mark on Puerto Rican baseball as a winter baseball manager and on the international stage. In 2003, he managed the first Puerto Rican National Team comprised of professional baseball players in a competition endorsed by the international federation.
He is survived by his sons, Roberto and Sandy Alomar Jr., both of whom enjoyed triumphant careers in Major League Baseball.
