Clowe’s decision comes a little more than ‌a year after he left his role as a senior advisor to the New York Rangers’ general manager Chris Drury to join Grier‘s front office in San Jose. His ⁢duties⁤ with the Sharks included working with the scouting and development staffs, Grier,⁤ and⁢ fellow assistant general managers Tom Holy and Joe Will, overseeing‍ all aspects of hockey operations.

“I was part of a ⁢great organization, a ⁤great team that (just finished) making a run in the ‌playoffs,” Clowe said in July 2024, reflecting on his time with the‍ Rangers. “Once ‌I spoke⁤ with Mike, and (we) went through it, it was an opportunity that I ⁤couldn’t turn down.”

The Sharks have not‌ announced plans to promptly fill the ‍vacancy. ⁤San Jose’s training camp is scheduled to begin‌ in less than two weeks, with the ⁤regular season opening at home on ‍October 9.

Clowe originally played for the Sharks from ⁢2005 to⁢ 2013,⁣ appearing in 423 regular-season games and recording 271 points with 567 penalty minutes. He also contributed ⁤45 points in 68 playoff games, helping the team reach the⁣ Western Conference final in both 2010 and 2011.Traded to the New York Rangers‌ in April 2023, Clowe later signed a five-year, $24.25 million contract with the New Jersey Devils as an unrestricted free⁣ agent that same ‌year. His playing career was cut short by concussions during the 2014-15 season. ⁤

Following his playing career, Clowe transitioned into a front-office role with the Devils,⁣ initially under ‍Lou⁢ lamoriello and later Ray Shero.‌ He served as an assistant ⁣coach with the Devils from‌ 2016 to 2018 before becoming head coach of the ECHL’s‍ Newfoundland growlers, a position he left midway through the 2018-2019 season due to concussion-related issues. ⁤He joined the Rangers as a hockey operations advisor during the 2021-2022 season and was promoted to ⁤senior advisor in August 2023.
