On Wednesday, September 23, Samsung will hold a virtual Galaxy event ‘for every fan’. The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition is announced here!
Tomorrow Samsung will organize a virtual event again, called ‘Galaxy Unpacked for Every Fan’. The event will be live streamed, several new products are expected including a Galaxy S20 Fan Edition – as a cheap alternative to the one launched earlier this year. Galaxy S20.
Normally, Samsung organizes a grand Galaxy Unpacked event twice a year. The Galaxy S series models will be introduced around February and an event for the Galaxy Note series will take place around August. For example, last month the Galaxy Note 20 (Ultra) in Galaxy Z Fold 2 announced during the Galaxy Unpacked 2020 Summer Edition. This time Samsung is organizing an extra event ‘for the fans’.
Samsung Galaxy S20 Fan Edition
There have been rumors for some time that Samsung has a Galaxy S20 Lite in development, which will be announced under the name Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition). A 4G and 5G model will be released, with the 4G model being powered by Samsung’s Exynos 990. For the 5G model, the Snapdragon 865 chipset from Qualcomm is chosen.
It is the first time that Samsung makes no distinction based on the country in which the device is released, but based on the model (4G / 5G). Normally, the Exynos variant is always used in Europe, for example, the entire S20 line-up in the Netherlands is powered by the Exynos 990. The Qualcomm counterpart is used for the S20 models that are sold in America and Korea. The Snapdragon 865 also comes out better in the test when we look at the geekbench performance than the Exynos 990. In that respect, the Galaxy S20 FE 5G will have something unique, because this will be the only S20 model that you can buy in the Netherlands with Snapdragon 865.
Nevertheless, it is a Lite variant, which means that savings will have to be made on certain points. For example, the Galaxy S20 FE will most likely be equipped with less memory (6GB RAM / 128GB ROM) and the necessary concessions will also be made in the camera area. There is talk of a 32 megapixel selfie camera (equivalent to the Galaxy S10 Lite). In addition, a triple camera will be placed on the back, consisting of 3x 12 megapixel sensors (telephoto camera, wide-angle and ultra-wide angle). The 3x Hybrid zoom function will probably be maintained, but the resolution of this camera will be less (12MP instead of 64MP).
The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE will also be a different device in terms of design. For example, this new S-series smartphone will have a flat display, instead of a (expensive) rounded display. The Fan Edition gets a 6.5-inch 1080p Full HD + display with a 120 Hertz refresh rate. This means that the display resolution is also slightly less high than with the standard S20 (1440p Quad HD +), but the screen of the S20 FE is larger (6.5 ″ vs 6.2 ″).
Furthermore, the Samsung S20 Fan Edition will have a plastic back, instead of glass. Samsung is rolling out the same strategy as with the recently launched one Note 20 in Note 20 Ultra – that also differ from each other in terms of flat / rounded display, plastic / glass back, amount of memory and the camera.
In terms of battery capacity, no differences are expected between the S20 and S20 FE, it is a 4,500 mAh battery. The Fan Edition will also simply be IP68 certified, making it dust and waterproof.
What will the Galaxy S20 FE cost?
The Fan Edition is likely to be released in white, blue, orange, lavender, green and red. Not all colors may be available in all countries. A few things are already known about the price. The German WinFuture reports that the 4G version will cost € 700, the 5G model will be charged € 800. For comparison, the Galaxy S20 4G received a suggested retail price of € 900 during the introduction, while the 5G variant was also charged an additional cost of € 100. That makes the difference € 200 – regardless of whether you opt for 4G or 5G.
However, the Galaxy S20 has been in the shops for six months now, so the sales price has already dropped considerably. Although Samsung still charges € 850 for the 4G model, there are now several web shops that offer this phone model much cheaper. At the time of writing, BelSimpel charges only € 745 for a separate, simlock-free device with 5G support. This means that the S20 is already cheaper than the S20 Fan Edition will soon cost.
It is possible that Samsung will set up a nice promotion during the pre-order period of the S20 Fan Edition, so that you can gain some extra advantage – such as free Galaxy Buds Live Earphones. In addition, the Fan Edition does not seem to be a Lite variant of the S20 on all points, but there will certainly be a number of differences in design and functions. It is therefore wise to compare these devices carefully before you make a final choice.

Samsung is also about to introduce a completely new phone series, the Galaxy F-series – with the Galaxy F41 becoming the first model. This smartphone seems to be very similar to the Galaxy M31. However, it remains to be seen whether the F-series models will also come to Europe, the devices will at least be sold in India. Samsung India has namely through Twitter let us know that this phone series will be introduced soon.
