Rare Feat: Only Six Holes-in-One recorded in Ryder cup History
NEW YORK – September 24,2025 – In nearly a century of Ryder Cup competition,a hole-in-one remains one of the rarest and most celebrated achievements. As the inaugural contest in 1927, only six aces have been recorded in the match play format, a testament to the pressure and difficulty of the competition. Of those six, five have come from players representing Great Britain & Ireland/Europe, with just one achieved by an American.
The first Ryder Cup ace didn’t arrive until 1973, and the most recent occurred in 2006, highlighting the exceptional nature of this golfing feat. Here’s a look back at each remarkable shot:
Holes-in-one at the Ryder Cup
* Peter Butler, GB&I, 1973: Butler holed his tee shot at the 188-yard 16th at Muirfield in Scotland during a foursomes match with brian Barnes. Despite the breathtaking shot, the pair ultimately lost their match 1 DOWN to Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf.
* Nick Faldo, Europe, 1993: The Englishman aced the 189-yard 14th at The Belfry during singles play, contributing to a halved match against Paul Azinger.
* Constantino Rocca, Europe, 1995: Rocca scored a memorable hole-in-one at the 167-yard sixth at Oak Hill Country Club while playing alongside Sam Torrance in foursomes. The European duo secured a dominant 6&5 victory over Davis Love III and Jeff Maggert.
* Howard Clark, Europe, 1995: A day later, also at Oak Hill, Clark made a hole-in-one on the 176-yard 11th in singles play, going on to defeat Peter Jacobsen 1 UP.
* Paul Casey, europe, 2006: During foursomes play at The K Club, Casey aced the 14th hole from 213 yards, sealing a “walk-off” 5&4 victory for him and David Howell against Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson.
* Scott Verplank, United States, 2006: Verplank recorded the only Ryder Cup ace by an American, draining his tee shot at the 14th in singles play to help secure a 4&3 victory against Pádraig Harrington.
