Russia Warns US Troops Could Become Targets if Tomahawk Missiles Are Launched From Ukraine
Moscow – Russia has issued a stark warning that U.S. military personnel could be directly targeted if the United States provides Ukraine with Tomahawk cruise missiles and assists in their launch. The statement comes amid reports the Trump management is reviewing a potential shift in policy regarding long-range weaponry for Ukraine, reversing previous restrictions.
The escalating rhetoric underscores the high stakes surrounding potential U.S. involvement in the conflict. While the Biden administration previously refrained from authorizing strikes on russian territory with U.S.-supplied weapons, fearing escalation, the current review signals a possible hardening of stance toward Moscow. The core issue, as articulated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, centers on determining who controls the targeting of the missiles – the U.S. or Ukraine – with Russia asserting that any U.S. involvement in launching attacks makes American forces legitimate targets.
According to reports from The Times and Russia’s TASS News Agency, Peskov stated on September 29th, “Can only Ukrainian troops [fire Tomahawk missiles] or US troops [fire them]? The US decides on the target of the missile, but Ukraine is determined by Ukraine.” He further cautioned that Tomahawk support would not be a “panacea” to change the situation, calling it ”no magical weapon.”
Andrey Kartapolov, Chairman of the Russian State Duma’s Defence committee, amplified the warning, stating that U.S. troops supporting the launch of Tomahawk missiles from ukraine “can be a Russian target,” adding that “no one will protect them.”
The potential provision of Tomahawk missiles is complicated by Ukraine’s lack of the necessary launch platforms – missile destroyers or strategic bombers – meaning U.S. personnel would be essential for deployment. The tomahawk missile has a maximum range of 2,500 km, placing cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg within its reach.
U.S.Vice President JD Vance indicated on Fox News September 28th that the President is “currently under review and will take measures to meet the highest interests of the United States.”
