Russia to Build New Military Base in Response to NATO Expansion

Moscow

Russia announced it would build a number of new military bases in the western part of its territory by the end of this year. This new military base is meant to respond to alliance expansion North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

As reported AFPFriday (20/5/2022), the plan to build a new military base was announced by the Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu in a recent statement quoted by Russian news agencies.

“By the end of the year, 12 military units and divisions will be established in the Western Military District,” Shoigu said in a statement.

Shoigu added that the Russian military is expected to receive more than 2,000 units of military equipment and weapons. He did not explain further about the types of military equipment and weapons in question.

Russian President Vladimir Putin shocked the world by deploying Russian soldiers to invade Ukrainea neighboring country, on February 24 last.

Russia called its invasion a ‘special military operation’ to get rid of the fascists in Ukraine. But Ukrainian authorities and their Western allies call it a baseless pretext for an unwarranted war.

Russia’s military invasion rocked Finland — which borders Moscow — and Sweden. The two countries even decided to abandon their long-held military non-aligned policy and join NATO.
