Russia Intensifies Ukraine Strikes After Criticism
Zelenskyy urges stronger action as Poland responds to overnight drone and missile attacks.
Despite recent censure from the U.S., overnight Russian forces launched the largest drone attack of the war on Ukraine, prompting international concern and renewed calls for sanctions against Moscow’s oil revenue.
Key Development
Despite harsh words from U.S. President Donald Trump who accused Vladimir Putin of spreading “a lot of bullshit,”
Russia pressed forward with a massive aerial assault on Ukraine.
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia targeted 741 targets
using 728 drones and 13 missiles
in the latest barrage.
The scale of the attack led neighboring Poland to scramble its own and allied aircraft to safeguard Polish airspace.
Zelenskyy decried the assault, stating:
“This is a telling attack – and it comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace, to establish a ceasefire, and yet only Russia continues to rebuff them all.”
He also reiterated the need for tougher economic measures:
“Our partners know how to apply pressure in a way that will force Russia to think about ending the war, not launching new strikes.
Everyone who wants peace must act.”
Zelenskyy maintained that Russia’s ongoing aggression proves “the need of sanctions – biting sanctions against oil, which has been fueling Moscow’s war machine with money for over three years of the war.”
International Response
The United Nations reported a 14% increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine in June 2024 compared to the previous month, highlighting the continued human cost of the conflict (UN Ukraine 2024).
