Russia ⁢Demands Clarity from US ⁣on Potential⁤ Nuclear Testing,‍ Warns of Retaliatory Measures

Moscow – Russia has formally requested‌ clarification‍ from the ⁤United⁣ States⁣ regarding‍ reports ‍of a potential resumption of nuclear weapons‌ testing, warning that ⁤such a move‍ could trigger⁢ a response from Russia adn⁢ other⁢ nations. The ‌demand comes after ‍former⁣ President Trump ordered the US⁤ military to restart nuclear‍ weapons testing, though ⁣the scope of the order – whether ⁢it encompassed flight tests or actual⁢ nuclear explosions – remains unclear.

According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson⁣ Maria Zakharova, “If [the US resumes nuclear explosions], this will create⁢ negative dynamics and provoke measures from other states, ⁢including Russia, in response.” She further stated that⁢ signals from Washington ⁤are causing “justified concern in⁣ all corners of the world” and require ‍clarification.

The concern prompted Russian President Vladimir putin to instruct senior officials on Wednesday to prepare proposals for a potential Russian nuclear ‍test should⁣ the US ⁣proceed with its own.⁤

Security analysts warn that resuming nuclear ‍tests by any major‍ power would be a destabilizing act, particularly‍ given‌ current geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing war in ⁤Ukraine, and⁣ could spur a wider arms race.

Russia and the ⁢US possess the world’s largest nuclear arsenals.⁣ A key ⁣treaty limiting‌ strategic nuclear warheads between the⁢ two countries is set to expire in three months, raising fears of an escalating arms race. President putin has proposed extending ‌the treaty’s limits for another year, but⁢ a formal response from the US has not yet been received.

It ‌has ‍been over⁤ three decades since either the US or Russia ⁢last conducted a nuclear‍ explosion test.
