President Trump is understood to have already approved the proposal, with his son-in-law Jared Kushner also involved in its development.
The proposed agreement would involve Ukraine ceding territory to Russia in exchange for security guarantees, the specifics of which remain unclear.Christiaan Paauwe, Central Europe Correspondent for NOS, reports the plan represents demands Ukraine will struggle to accept, potentially amounting to “a kind of capitulation,” particularly regarding the contested Donbas region, which Ukraine has consistently stated it will not relinquish. Paauwe notes the difficult circumstances Ukraine faces – ongoing Russian attacks, infrastructure damage, and internal political turmoil – could pressure Kyiv into accepting unfavorable terms.
A senior US diplomatic team, led by Dan Driscoll, is currently in Ukraine to discuss the plan with President zelenskyy upon his return from a visit to turkey. The discussions occur amidst continued Russian airstrikes on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilian targets. Yesterday, an attack on an apartment building in Ternopil, western Ukraine, resulted in 26 deaths and 93 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials.
