Russell Brand goes on trial as prosecution alleges he is a sexual predator
Russell Brand went on trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court on October 14, 2026, facing accusations from prosecutors that he operated as a ruthless sexual predator over a decade-long period involving six women.
Prosecution Opening Statements Detail Seven Charges
Brand, 51, has pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault covering alleged offenses between 1999 and 2009. Riel Karmy-Jones KC, representing the prosecution, told the jury that Brand possessed an indiscriminate and voracious appetite for sexual contact, describing him as calculating and manipulative. Karmy-Jones stated that the comedian maintained a childlike expectation that his every desire should be met.
The trial is expected to last about six weeks, with proceedings drawing significant media attention and utilizing a second court to accommodate journalists. Brand sat in the dock wearing a dark suit and a thin white scarf, accompanied by his wife, Laura.
Timeline of Alleged Offenses Presented in Court
The prosecution outlined a series of incidents spanning ten years. The earliest alleged offense occurred in 1999, when prosecutors state Brand raped a woman in a hotel room during the Labour Party’s annual conference in Bournemouth, where he was performing on the fringe. A co-performer from that show allegedly told authorities that Brand had bragged about wanting to bed 5,000 women in his lifetime.
Additional allegations involve incidents at media and broadcast workplaces. In 2001, a former MTV employee alleged Brand attempted to drag her into a toilet cubicle. Another accuser working for Channel 4 alleged that same year Brand demanded a massage and pressed his face into her groin area. Further charges include an alleged sexual assault at Capital Radio in 2004 or 2005, and an allegation of oral rape in the restroom of a London bar in 2004 during a producer’s birthday party.
The final charges relate to 2009 incidents, including an allegation that a 21-year-old fan was anally raped at Brand’s home after meeting him at a show, and a claim that he demanded a massage and pressed his face into a woman’s groin during an advertisement recording.
Brand Denies Nonconsensual Sexual Activity
The six complainants did not know each other and came forward following a 2023 television program and press report featuring anonymous allegations from other women, according to prosecution statements. None of the women reported the incidents at the time due to guilt, shame, and concern over being blamed.

During police interviews, Brand declined to answer questions directly but provided written statements denying any nonconsensual sexual activity and stating he did not remember the incidents, while acknowledging he had previously engaged in sex in toilet cubicles during parties. Defense barrister Ian Winter KC represents Brand in the trial.
Outside the courtroom, Brand told Sky News that he felt concerned but hopeful that the legal process would lead to good outcomes for everybody involved, adding, “That’s my prayer.”
